Ancient Peaks Renegade Red Blend Santa Margarita Ranch Paso Robles 2014

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2014 Renegade offers concentrated red and black fruit aromas with suggestions of cedar, smoked bacon and high-toned oak. The palate is prodigious and intense, packed with velvety layers of boysenberry, black cherry, blueberry and cranberry, with trailing hints of vanilla, caramel, coffee and black pepper. The fruit extends lavishly into the finish, braced by fine, integrated tannins and juicy acidity.

It is family-owned winery specializing in estate-grown wines from Margarita Vineyard, the southernmost vineyard in the Paso Robles appellation on California’s Central Coast. There, amid the rugged Santa Lucia mountain range just 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean, Margarita Vineyard stands alone as the only vineyard in its vicinity, and thus the only vineyard to benefit from the extraordinary growing conditions of the area. Margarita Vineyard resides in the historic Santa Margarita Ranch, which was first planted to vines by Franciscan missionaries in 1774. Ancient Peaks and Margarita Vineyard are owned by three longtime local winegrowing families—the Filipponis, Rossis and Wittstroms—who are actively involved in the daily operations of the vineyard and winery. Ancient Peaks wines are crafted under the guidance of Mike Sinor, a local winemaking veteran and one of the highest-rated winemakers on the Central Coast. Read less

Dry and dusty earth notes on the nose mask the fruit but after a few shakes they open, showing ripe strawberry and raspberry notes. The palate is all fruit on the attack, with blueberry, cranberry, strawberry and raspberry rushing in followed by juicy acidity, hot spice and earthy licorice and eucalyptus notes following towards the finish with more oaken spice and wooded smoke.
