Ancient Peaks Red Blend Paso Robles Renegade Margarita Vineyard 2009

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

A bit of an unusual nose with a hint of pine cones yet not balsamic. This is clean and light with a background note of eucalyptus and some sweet red licorice notes over medicinal violet pastille, carob, and dried black plum aromas with a nice teriyaki beef top note. Smooth and fairly seamless on entry, this is a big wine, make no mistake about it, but it's fairly well-balanced and doesn't have too much baby fat today. There's some lovely grapey, black plum and date flavors here all wrapped up in pencil lead, African violet, and lightly toasted coconutty oak flavors. The finish shows a bit of spicy, zesty pomegranate along with a fairly long oak imprint and just a hint of warmth. Big and rambunctious, this is a lusty wine perfect for BBQ beef ribs. 89pts

It is family-owned winery specializing in estate-grown wines from Margarita Vineyard, the southernmost vineyard in the Paso Robles appellation on California’s Central Coast. There, amid the rugged Santa Lucia mountain range just 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean, Margarita Vineyard stands alone as the only vineyard in its vicinity, and thus the only vineyard to benefit from the extraordinary growing conditions of the area. Margarita Vineyard resides in the historic Santa Margarita Ranch, which was first planted to vines by Franciscan missionaries in 1774. Ancient Peaks and Margarita Vineyard are owned by three longtime local winegrowing families—the Filipponis, Rossis and Wittstroms—who are actively involved in the daily operations of the vineyard and winery. Ancient Peaks wines are crafted under the guidance of Mike Sinor, a local winemaking veteran and one of the highest-rated winemakers on the Central Coast. Read less

Coconut Rice Sweet Potato Cheesecake

RiceSelect's creamy Arborio gets blended with sweet potato, coconut milk and vanilla to create this decadent cheesecake. Pairs well with Saunternes; a white dessert wine that has hints of coconut from aging in oak barrels.

This is why I drink wine. In between every 50-100 or so wines that I sample, one stands out like a flash of light. The nose on the Renegade is an addictive blend of dark fruit, toast, and tobacco, with intense earthy complexity in the palate. The length is there, with a subtle strawberry fruit finish. This probably sounds like every one of my other tasting notes, but the balance on this one is so perfect, that it really blew me away. Very drinkable, great complexity. It elevated my senses!

Truly a renegade, this wine stands out from the rest. Enormous aromas of boysenberry, coffee, and tobacco. Juicy acidity and smooth tannins combine to balance superbly in your mouth.
