Winemaker's Notes:
This is Rick’s first Barbera, a somewhat obscure Italian red varietal from Piemonte (where it plays second fiddle to Nebbiolo). In California, Barbera is also obscure, but it was fairly widely planted in the “early days” because it tends to maintain a bright acidity in warm growing conditions, such as Clarksburg. This wine is characterized by savory and dark fruit notes both in aroma and flavor. The meaty, leathery aspects are quite Italianate, though the mouthfeel is Californian with nice brighness and moderate tannins. It’s very approachable now, but it has the character to reward 3-5 more years in bottle.
