Amon Ra Ben Glaetzer Sra Barossa Valley South Australia 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

The rich purple colour of the 09 vintage indicates both youthful exuberance and density. A compelling nose of expresso, truffles, dark plums and blackcurrant with layers of aromatic intensity that remains fresh and lively. The palate is multi-layered, with masses of cassis and mixed spice, and a hint of chocolate. Amon-Ra 09 displays an appealing brightness and beguiling purity. This is an Amon-Ra that will be remembered for its true, elegant expression of our Ebenezer terroir.

Winemaking patriarch Colin Glaetzer established his own label to create wines he’s passionate about - limited quantities of benchmark Barossa Valley reds. It is the pinnacle of Colin's 30-year career with achievements such as his creation of the revered Barossa Valley Estates E & E Black Pepper Shiraz. The birth of Glaetzer Wines also signalled a new era for Colin’s family which boasts more than its fair share of winemakers. The clan includes Colin, his oenology-trained wife Judith, twin brother/winemaker John, and five winemakers among the couple's three sons and their wives! The first Glaetzers settled in the Barossa Valley in 1888 after emigrating from Brandenburg, Germany. The family left Germany on board the Nord-Deutscher Lloyd steamer “Habsburg” and took seven weeks to reach their final destination of Port Adelaide. From here they settled in a country town called Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley where they started their new life in Australia. The family were some of the earliest recorded viticulturalists in the Barossa Valley and Clare Valley and the current generation is firmly entrenched in the family wine business. Read less

We reviewed this wine a second time on 5/14/2011 with a different set of members in our group. Here are notes for this second tasting: An ocean breeze, with a faint aroma of seaweed, announces the aromatic journey of this luxurious wine. The sea breeze soon embraces herbal, fruity, floral and woody scents, including hints of thyme, oregano, licorice, cherry, blueberry, blackberry, red berries, jasmine, rose, vanilla and oak. The palate is framed by a pleasant acidity, with strong tannins leaving an initially astringent taste in the back. The center fruit bowl focuses on cherry, with emerging accents of red berries and blueberry. Vanilla and licorice surface intermittently, and herbal influences suggest hints of oregano and thyme. The evolution does not lead to great complexity, but does migrate through a medley of flavors that offer a delightful combination, on an ever-drying front-of-tongue and a consistently tart acidity that balances the sweet fruit in the center and the harsh tannic scaffolding at the edges.

This is a rich, complex wine that evolves nicely over several hours. It has the classic Barossa nose with florals, herbs and spices joining licorice and mocha, with a blueberry and pomegranate core. The palate opens with slightly bitter dark and blue fruits in the center, featuring blueberry, cassis, cranberry and pomegranate, as licorice and herbal notes burst forth in the back. Harmonies of various fruits, herbs and spices merge and change over 4 hours, adding interest and complexity. The phases include backgrounds that evolve from woodsy to home garden to barnyard to cut green vegetable atmospherics around fruit and spice in the center. This wine also goes through phases of tightening and tannic bitterness that suggest a need to leave in the cellar for a couple of years.

The 2009 Amon-Ra Shiraz displays a very deep purple-black color and floral notes of violets and wilted rose petals over mulberries, blueberries, star anise, mocha, fenugreek, cumin seeds, cloves and tree bark plus some toasty oak. Full-bodied and ric... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. A Syrah wine from South Australia in Australia. 2009 Glaetzer Amon Ra Shiraz 750ml
