Amethyst Cabernet Sauvignon 2003

Winemaker's Notes:

This is our third release of Cabernet for Amethyst, and it is by far the most intense in terms of extract and flavor concentration. This was not a deliberate attempt on our part to change the style of the wine rather it is a reflection of what the character of this vintage is. It is our belief that one of the joys of fine wine is that they reflect the differences in the vintage years.

There is a proverb that states: 'By leaping to avoid your fate, you meet it.' Even before the Nebbiolo vineyard which would form the original basis of Amethyst was planted, cofounder Mike Richmond thought the name Amethyst deserved a wine. Amethyst was a nymph in a Roman myth about Bacchus, and seemed a perfect namesake. The label's stylized image of wine amphoras reference the myth. When the Richmond (formerly T and A) Vineyard bore fruit and was first made into wine in 1994 the name became the wine. The original Nebbiolo blend which we call Vinalia continues to be made. In 2001 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon was made the primary focus of Amethyst. Grapes from the Brooks Family Vineyard in the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley are the foundation of this wine. In 2004 and 2005 we added a white wine, a reserve (Alsatian style) Pinot Gris/Grigio from the Carneros District. In 2008 we completed the transition to fully bonded Winery using a alternating proprietorship(AP) and Amethyst wines are now produced under a "rotating bond" in the facilities at Bouchaine Winery in the Carneros AVA of Napa Valley Our goal is to create delicious wines expressing the best each varietal and vintage has to offer. Tasting Note The 2003 effort from Amethyst is a balanced wine, with plenty of concentration in reserve. Hints of refined cassis liqueur, red currant preserves, and black cherry glide across the palate, while undertones of anise and fresh-cut cedar frame the elegant finish. This wine is reminiscent of the finest Bordeaux, and one can tell that the extra care and bottle aging has made a discernible difference in the final product. Fewer than 30 barrels of this special wine were made, so when Mike offered a small amount exclusively to Lot18, we naturally jumped. These wines will not be here long, so be sure to stock up! —Kevin Boyer
