Winemaker's Notes:

WINERY: "Dao: DOC wine region in north central portugal with the reputation of producing some of the country's best red wines (see map under portugal). There is no doubt that the region has great potential. Locked in on three sides by high, granite mountains and sheltered from the Atlantic, Dao benefits from long, warm summers and abundant winter rainfall. The sandy soils are well drained and the vineyards are stocked with a wealth of indigenous grape varieties. Over much of the last 50 years, however, the wines have rarely lived up to expectations." "About 80 per cent of Dao wines are red, with Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Jaen, and Alfrocheiro Preto having been indentified as the region's leading varieties. In theory, Touriga Nacional, one of the main port grapes which probably originated in Dao, should account for at least 20 per cent of any blend but in reality usually accounts for much less. Although non-vinifera varieties have now largely been weeded out, there are still large quantities of such relatively inferior grapes as Bastardo, Tinta Pinheira, and Baga. Red Dao tends to be firm and tannic and, in the past, many wines suffered from excessively prolonged maceration with the stalks and protracted ageing in old casks or cement tanks. The new generation of producers is more meticulous and some have invested in new French and Portuguese oak." -Jancis Robinson, "Oxford Companion to Wine"
