Amavi Walla Walla Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

External Review by Premier Wine & Spirits:

Bright ruby-red. Pure, subtle aromas of cassis, blackberry, licorice and nutty oak. Lush and broad but not particularly sweet, with a fairly high pitch to the fruit and spice flavors. No shortage of material here. Finishes with substantial tannins.

Our name is a combination of the Latin root words "am" (love) and "vi" (life). It represents our simple pursuits: love, life and wine (or as we like to say: amor - vita - vinum). We pronounce it "ahh muh vee." You can be certain you are saying it the way we do if it rhymes with "momma me." Located in the Walla Walla Valley, Amavi Cellars crafts elegant, approachable wines, focusing on estate-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. We also make small amounts of Sémillon, Rosé, and dessert wines that are typically available only in the tasting room. We are proud to be small and family owned. Two generations are active in management of the winery and the vineyards. Winemaker Jean-François Pellet is a third-generation winemaker and grape grower. Quality, hospitality and sustainability are our underlying values. We would love for you to visit us in our tasting room. Critics often say our wines have a phenomenally good quality-to price-ratio. Our estate vineyards—Les Collines, Seven Hills, and Pepper Bridge— are farmed sustainably. We build up the soil's health rather than deplete it and seek out earth-friendly alternatives to fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides. We are committed to not only preserving, but also improving the land for future generations. Read less

The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon contains a similar addition of Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet Franc and was also aged in French, American, and Hungarian oak, 38% new. A bit more reticent, it is softer and more forward that its younger sibling. It has plenty of savory fruit, good balance and 2-3 years of aging potential.

This full-bodied, generous Cabernet is ripe and rich, focusing its dark-toned berry, black olive and pepper flavors beautifully. The tannins are present on the finish, but canrsquo;t stop the fruit. Best from 2010 through 2017.

Winemaker Jean-Franccedil;ois Pellet, who also makes the wines for pepper Bridge Winery, is crafting approachable Cabernets in the Walla Walla Valley that balance quality and value. He included 14 percent Merlot, 9 percent Syrah and 1 percent Malbec to add depth to this full-bodied Cabernet, with the majority of the grapes coming from the wineryrsquo;s three estate-owned vineyards: Pepper Bridge, Les Collines and Seven Hills.

Smooth and supple, Amavirsquo;s 2005 Cabernet includes a healthy bit of Syrah, which adds details of spice and pepper to the smooth and supple cassis and black cherry fruit. Tannins are ripe and well-defined, and the wine carries subtle suggestions of olive and tea. Itrsquo;s focused and bright, polished and immediately delicious, though it could certainly cellar for a few years.

The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon includes 14% Merlot, 9% Syrah, and 1% Malbec. It was aged in 35% new French, American, and Hungarian oak. Purple-colored, it has an enticing nose of cedar, spice box, red currant, and black currant. Slightly austere with moderate tannin, it should be drunk near-term while the fruit holds.
