Amavi Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla Valley 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

90 points Wine Enthusiast: Beautifully balanced, this offers the perfect expression of Washington State brightness and a Bordeaux-like herbal component. The tannins are fine and drying, and the wine is polished, with plenty of astringent, herbal flavors in the finish. Don't look for big fruit here, but for a Euro style, this is a sure bet. Our name is a combination of the Latin root words "am" (love) and "vi" (life). It represents our simple pursuits: love, life and wine (or as we like to say: amor - vita - vinum). We pronounce it "ahh muh vee." You can be certain you are saying it the way we do if it rhymes with "momma me." Located in the Walla Walla Valley, Amavi Cellars crafts elegant, approachable wines, focusing on estate-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. We also make small amounts of Sémillon, Rosé, and dessert wines that are typically available only in the tasting room. We are proud to be small and family owned. Two generations are active in management of the winery and the vineyards. Winemaker Jean-François Pellet is a third-generation winemaker and grape grower. Quality, hospitality and sustainability are our underlying values. We would love for you to visit us in our tasting room. Critics often say our wines have a phenomenally good quality-to price-ratio. Our estate vineyards—Les Collines, Seven Hills, and Pepper Bridge— are farmed sustainably. We build up the soil's health rather than deplete it and seek out earth-friendly alternatives to fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides. We are committed to not only preserving, but also improving the land for future generations. Read less

Well, it feels like summer is finally here, as we've had a few days in the 90s, but the humidity isn't too bad yet, so the evenings have been nice and cool...perfect for enjoying a nice glass of wine on the patio! And for tonight's glass, we have the 2008 Amavi Cellars Walla Walla Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, a classic varietal from the Columbia Valley of Washington State. Some of my absolute favorite producers are from the Walla Walla Valley, but this is a producer that I hadn't heard of before being introduced to it by Dave Russo, of my favorite local wine merchant, G.B. Russo's. This wine is a classic Washington Cab, with a deep ruby color that looks almost black in the glass. Earth and roasted coffee nose with hints of barnyard. Flavors of black cherry, plum, mineral and cocoa powder. Big and dry with substantial tannin. Supple and powerful mouthfeel. Perhaps more time will relax the tannins. 88 pts. 8/12/11 at Winery
