External Reviews for Amancaya Malbec-Cabernet Gran Reserva
50% Malbec, 50% Cabernet Sauvignon; Spices, violets, black fruits; firm and tannic, needs 3ndash;4 years aging.
Amancaya is a second wine for Caro, a blend of 55 percent malbec and 45 percent cabernet sauvignon. Young and tough, it shows the darker side of the Andes with coal and black cherry aromas over dense black fruit and hard tannins. Two hours later, the malbec side begins to dominate with lovely cherry notes and floral aromas.
Full ruby-red. Complex, Medoc-like nose combines redcurrant, nutty oak, leather, tobacco leaf and fresh herbs. Supple and suave, with a restrained sweetness and a fine-grained texture. The broad tannins reach the teeth. Showing a bit less energy and nuance than the 2008 at the same stage, but this is pliant and well-made wine.
Focused and ripe, with streamlined raspberry and blackberry fruit framed by fine-grained tannins and notes of cedar and vanilla. Nice concentration and balance, in a distinctly Bordeaux style. Drink now through 2006.
A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, the 2003 Amancaya is a rich, fruity and very dense red wine. With loads of red, fleshy fruits and a subtle tannic kick, this wine is sure to please the palates of the seasoned wine enthusiast and the weekend warrior alike.
From the Catena-Rothschild partnership that is Bodegas Caro, Amancaya blends Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon in an appealing way. The nose is a touch bretty and rustic, but airing reveals stout fruit and structure. The flavor profile revolves around ripe plum and berry, while coffee and a touch of heat and alcohol work the finish. Another year in the bottle would not hurt this wine.
Bright red-ruby. Subtle, fresh and wonderfully aromatic nose offers complex scents of redcurrant, blueberry, strawberry, tobacco, mocha, graphite, leather and cedar. Penetrating and claret-like, with superb delineation to the redcurrant and tobacco flavors. Perfectly integrated acidity and an intriguing herbal nuance give this wine a light touch. Finishes with tactile, dusty tannins and lovely lift and persistence. Offers compelling complexity and class for the price. This is actually the second wine issued by this joint venture between Lafite-Rothschild and Nicolas Catena: the 2007 flagship bottling had not yet arrived in the market at press time.
