Amancaya Malbec-Cab 2009
89 points Stephen Tanzer (International Wine Cellar): (a 70/30 blend) Full ruby-red. Complex, Medoc-like nose combines redcurrant, nutty oak, leather, tobacco leaf and fresh herbs. Supple and suave, with a restrained sweetness and a fine-grained texture. The broad tannins reach the teeth. Showing a bit less energy and nuance than the 2008 at the same stage, but this is pliant and well-made wine. (Jan/Feb 2011)
Luscious bouquet of black cherry, blackberry, and even hoi sin sauce, showing more cabernet than malbec and a tiny touch of funk, but the high note of malbec dominates in the mouth; it’s an odd contrast that may work well with strong cheeses, especially from goat’s milk. Focused, and very Bordeaux-like, with cedar, currant, fig and coffee notes framed by tobacco and cedar hints. Solid length. Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2008.
50% Malbec, 50% Cabernet Sauvignon; Spices, violets, black fruits; firm and tannic, needs 3-4 years aging.
Concentrated and focused, with alluring cedar and roasted vanilla notes weaving through the dark currant and plum fruit, followed by a nicely structured finish. More like Cabernet than Malbec. Rock-solid. Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2010.
Overtly toasty, but with a core of plum, cassis and anise. The finish shows fruitcake and toast notes, with a slightly firm edge. Should soften with brief cellaring. Not the usual house style. Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2011. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.
Sweet and open on the nose, with blackberry and pure grape aromas. The palate has a tight, drawing texture but rewarding flavors of spice and roasted berry fruit. Long and flavorful on the finish, with bite and tannic residue. A wine with positive components but a rough young feel.

From the Catena-Rothschild partnership that is Bodegas Caro, Amancaya blends Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon in an appealing way. The nose is a touch bretty and rustic, but airing reveals stout fruit and structure. The flavor profile revolves around ripe plum and berry, while coffee and a touch of heat and alcohol work the finish. Another year in the bottle would not hurt this wine.
