Alvear Sherry Fino En Rama 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

90 points Wine Advocate: The 2008 Fino En Rama is unfiltered, unfortified Fino from Pedro Ximenez grapes aged under flor for three years. Being unfiltered, everything seems to be one step up -- the intensity, aroma, the smoky character and the chalkiness from the soil. The palate is wider, medium- to full-bodied, pungent, crisp and very dry, with an acute bitter note in the finish. 10,000 bottles produced. Drink 2013-2015. (Aug 2013) -Luis Gutierrez

A wonderful introduction to Fino Sherry, this Sherry has less of the acetone aromas and tanginess that put off new Sherry inductees. It is, however, characteristically nutty, with a hearty dose of saltwater and brine and it is bone dry and juicily acidic. The “en Rama” is a single vintage Sherry, made without blending and without filtering. Read more wine reviews at: www.winedinewith.us

Nice light golden tone with a strong bouquet of both cantelope melon and almond with a hit of woodiness right near the end. The palate has that salty and creamy quality that I find typical to most finos, but differentiates itself by the strong lemon and almond flavors on the finish. When we first opened it right out of fridge, I have to say that I wasn't an enormous fan, but as it warmed up, I found it quite pleasant, much better with tapas, but enjoyable on its own. 3.5

Light gold steely almost. The nose is a revelation for sherry wines showing pear, peach, and other haunting fruits that are difficult to pick out. Very dry in the mouth with an amazingly soft lush acidity. On the palate flavors of candied pear, light salt air, and a lingering soft finish make this one of the most fun wines I have tried in a long time. Bravo. 5/5 [NR]

Light yellow gold in color. The nose show's subtle wood notes, and light almond hints. Delicate melon and light citrus come in towards the end as it opens. Soft in the mouth with a gentle creaminess and rich nutty finish. Light steely notes at the end with a bit of the classic salt air. As it opens you start to see the melon and citrus notes but the nutty wood really is the main focus. Really a beautiful little wine though starting to show it's age some with the delicate mineral/fruit notes fading. 4/5 [NR]

Almost fully clear and lacking in color. The nose a a delicate peach aroma with restrained mineral notes and a faint nuttiness. Ethereal. Softr and creamy in the mouth with light salt notes, and a medium acidity. The finish and palate show delictate notes of salted almonds and hazelnuts. 3.5/5 [NR]

Light brown and slightly translucent in color. Aromas lean toward raisin and prune but there s orange zest and molasses on the bouquet as well. Bores straight ahead on the palate with sweet flavors of burnt brown sugar caramel and prune. Satisfying and balanced even if it s not overly complex. - M.S. Wine Enthusiast.

Amber colour and delicate hues of ripe fruit. Clean, light and superbly stylish, it is a pure raisin wine that combines a full aroma with a pleasant fruitiness. Appealing nectar with a pleasant vinosity. Silky smooth in texture.

Wine Advocate ReviewAlvear's light greenish-hued 2003 Fino en Rama is a fresh, lively, hazelnut-scented cuvee with good underlying acidity as well as wonderful ripeness and zing. It will drink beautifully over the next 6-12 months with rich soups or sushi. Importer Jorge Ordonez has begun to offer single vintage finos, aged two years in traditional American oak botas (500 liters), so consumers have an opportunity to understand how zesty a fino can be.
