Alvaro Placios Camins del Priorat Bodegas Álvaro Palacios Tarragona/España 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2007 is the first vintage of the Camins, which joins the rather prestigious company of the three other wines in Alvaro's Priorat range, topped off by the now iconic Ermita. Camins is certainly the most economically priced, its price-tag representing outstanding value for a wine that has been sourced from the steep slate terraces of Gratallops and surrounding villages. The wine is made from 50% Samsó, 40% Garnacha and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Ageing takes place for 8 months in barrels and wooden vats. The result is typically glossy, velvety even, a Pinot Noir on heat if you like. And if you, quite reasonably, don't like that description, what about black cherry, a hint of wood smoke, iris, raspberry and gentle spice. Ripe and generous, this will work well with richer sauce-based dishes and most red meats.

Bottle was aired 1.5 hrs and tested at 70 deg F. Delicious savory (versus sweet)-tasting almost meaty deep wine. Apparently the winemaker bought many small lots of fruit from many small producers to "assemble" this wine (unverified). Attractive nose of powdery mineral, perfumed floral, sweet spice, and not much fruit. In the mouth had deep meaty savory ripe fruit (plum, dark berries) with hints of minerals and hint of leather. Finish was balanced but not too long. Body medium, acid medium, tannin medium plus. Dry. 60% carignan, 30% grenache, 10% cab sauv.

This wine contains bright concentrated fruits such as red berries and raspberry. It has gentle acidity which gives energy to the wine and adds bite to the tangy, focused finished.
