Altos las Hormigas Malbec Reserva 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

Altos Las Hormigas is a 216 hectare estate situated in Lujan de Cuyo, one of Mendoza’s top grape-growing areas. It was bought by winemaker Alberto Antonini and Antonio Morescalchi together with some of their friends after their first trip to Argentina. They planted 40 hectares of Malbec between 1996-1999 on gentle slopes at 800m above sea level which face east towards the Andes. They also buy in grapes, primarily from La Consulta (south of Mendoza city). Grapes for the Reserva are grown in the Altos vineyards and also in nearby vineyards whose vines are nearly 100 years old in La Consulta - Vista Flores (Uco Valley), and Vistalba - Perdriel - LasCompuertas ( Luján de Cuyo). Deep red/black in colour, with intense perfumes of red fruit, plum jam and blackcurrants. On the palate the wine is intense and concentrated, with good structure and tobacco, chocolate and coffee characters, balanced by a mineral note. Ripe, supple tannins support the fruit through to a long, perfumed finish.

The estate's total area is 206 hectares, 45 of which planted. The only varietal planted is Malbec, clones are obtained from careful field selection. The vineyards have a density of over 4,000 plants per hectare, and were planted between 1996 and 1999, free of root stock and raised with the guyot method. At the heart of the property stands the 2,000 square meter cellar with its capacity for 16,000 hectolitres plus approximately 900 hectolitre capacity in small oak. Completed in 2001, the cellar was designed to have minimal impact on the territory, respecting the local traditional architecture. Inside, however, it is designed to achieve the very best technical conditions, such as temperature control, hygienic impeccability and a streamlined functionality with respect to all wine making processes. Indeed, sobriety and functionality have been our guidelines in every respect. Read less

Tasty, but a little too expensive for me to choose it again. I'd rather buy more Luca.

Super dark legs, sticks to side. Smooth black fruit nose, with ripe banana. Tannic and acidic, but really smooth. Reminds me of Argentina! Superconcentrated. Steak nose. Enormous. Pepper. Light medicinal nose.

ugh - this was one of the most disappointing wines I've ever tried - when we opened it, it smelled like turpentine and oak, and nothing else. It was virtually undrinkable, and although after about an hour of sitting out, it got marginally better, the strong, strong taste of the oak really drove this wine - no fruit to speak of. Buyer beware.
