Altocedro Malbec la Consulta Reserva 2007

Member Review by Wine Fire:

Big, upfront fruit on the nose, with cherry dominating. Scents of raisin, blueberry, raspberry, licorice, coffee, chocolate, and forest floor moss mix fleetingly in the cherry breeze, resulting in a smooth array of pleasant aromas. The palate opens like biting on tea bags impregnated with rich red fruits, making the taste harsh at first on the back end, but bright in the middle, and a bit wild and “untamed” throughout. The astringent tannic after-bite makes this wine an excellent candidate for pairing with steak. Strong acidity helps develop additional flavors of anise, white pepper and licorice, with undertones of tobacco, coffee and chocolate, as the cherry and raspberry theme sustains throughout each sip and for at least three hours after uncorking. Fleeting notes of tart blueberry, blackberry, persimmon and cranberry appear at the edges and rear, adding tang and boosting salivation. The fairly short finish is peppery and astringent, but tries to find its balance over time in the glass or open bottle.
