A very unusual nose, both bitter and herbal as well as creamy and buttery. Coffee, licorice and brewed tea come to the fore with air. Smooth in the mouth with black spiced berry fruit that is tight but simple. Shows pretty good length but nothing standouts. Pleasant and ordinary. 85pts

Blackberry flavors. Thin feeling. Not bad, but I have had better at this price point. A little too much of an alcohol taste. Drink the day you open it. Not so good the second day.

Mesmas uvas do Brunello sem os 4 anos em barrica. É mais frutado e com menos madeira. #3+

Ruby red in color when young, with garnet nuances which tend to be enhanced with age. Very intense and persistent on the nose with aromas of violet and ripe plum that also appear on the palate. firm tannins that need to become round.

Bright, dark red. Complex nose melds cherry, sweet spices, herbs and woodsy, truffley underbrush. Juicy, brisk and penetrating on the palate, with highly aromatic but rather cool red berry and floral flavors. Very youthful wine, finishing with lovely length and lift, and late notes of currant, cherry and leather. The tannins dust the front teeth. Needs six or seven years of additional bottle aging.

Wonderfully floral aromas, with plenty of ripe fruit and hints of minerals and spices. Full-bodied and chunky, with well-integrated tannins and a long finish. Fresh and refined. Best after 2003.

Outstandingly fresh aromas of roses, berries and spicy oak with hints of incense. Full-bodied, with silky and caressing tannins and a long, finely textured finish. A very pretty wine already. Hard to resist. Best after 2005.

Altesino's medium to full-bodied 1997 Brunello di Montalcino boasts a dense ruby/garnet color in addition to aromas of creosote, new saddle leather, figs, plums, dried herbs, and white flowers. It is a meaty, complex, accessible, concentrated yet still young, vigorous Brunello with good underlying acidity and moderated tannin. It can be drunk now or cellared for 12-15 years.
