The wine is almost black in the glass. An intense mix of black fruit, cocoa, cedar, and red roses delight the nose. Substantial but rounded tannins herald in a fully extracted style of wine. Huge flavors of blackberry jam, black cherries, plums, chocolate, and sweet oak give the palate quite a ride.

($60) Deep ruby-red. Dark berries, cherry, leather and game on the rather rustic nose, with a grapey nuance. Then pliant and superripe in the mouth, with creamy fruit flavors complicated by leather and earth. Finishes with slightly dry tannins and good leathery length. I would drink this funky boy in the near term for its creamy sweetness.

Frank Altamura has quietly created a following among lovers of rich extracted Cabernet Sauvignon. His 1999 was a critical benchmark in a vintage that showed some unevenness. Created from dominant amounts of clone 6 and 337 from over a dozen lots, the 2001 shows off a deep, rich nose of figs, black cherry and currant and flavors of plum, mineral, and black currants all wrapped into a beautifully polished package. Created on the "back side" of Napa Valley, this is one worth "discovery." 3800 cases produced.
