Alpha Zeta Valpolicella 2015

Winemaker's Notes:

Alpha Zeta was started in 1999 when leading New Zealand winemaker, Matt Thomson, set out to produce a range of modern, fruit driven wines from the hills outside Verona. The aim was to work with growers (rather than buy bulk wine, which is standard among most wines from Verona at this price) to obtain ripe grapes and then, using Matt's expertise, preserve these flavours in the finished wines. The vineyards are situated in the hills outside Verona. Matt selected those in excellent moderate vigour sites where the growers had significantly reduced the crop. This Corvina blend shows lovely depth of colour, with perfumes of fresh black cherries. On the palate the wine is soft and ripe, with a light, youthful freshness which lifts its cherry pie flavours and accentuates its perfume. The palate has good length with a hint of cherry chocolate on the finish.

Appearance is super light and transparently clear....cherry/raspberry juice looking. The aromas are fresh, lively and youthful....cranberry and tart cherry dominate...the flavors follow suit, being young, tart but fruity and juicy....the mouthfeel is juicy, light and drinkable. Not what I'm used to but I'm glad I tried this wine made from local Verona grape varieties.....would have again!

Oh, my favorite red wine. It goes well with soooo much, except sushi, actually. It's worth hunting around for. YUM.
