Alois Lageder Pinot Nero Krafuss Italy 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Alois Lageder's great grandfather founded the winery over 150 years ago in Alto Adige,Northeast Italy. In 1934, the family acquired the Lowengang estate in Magre and continuedadding other prime Alto Adige vineyards. Now in its fifth generation, the company is led by AloisLageder. His brother-in-law Luis von Dellemann, is the winemaker. Today Lageder owns 185acres across a variety of microclimates. In the higher elevation Alpine climate, Riesling, Muller-Thurgau and Gewurztraminer grow well. Farther downhill, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and PinotBianco find enough warmth. In the valley floor, where temperatures exceed 90 F. in thesummer, reds thrive. There are a variety of soils mostly a mix of limestone and clay, with somevolcanic porphyry. Lageder divides production into two brands Alois Lageder and TenutaeLageder. The wines of the Alois Lageder are made partly from grapes grown in their sustainablyfarmed estate vineyards and partly from grapes purchased through long-term relationships withrespected sustainable growers. Tenutae Lageder wines are made from certified biodynamicestate vineyards or from vineyards working towards certification.

Alois Lageder produces four different groups of wines: Classic Wines, Single Vineyard Wines, Biodynamics and Estate Wines. Alois Lageder’s wines are directed to a quality-conscious public and are available only in better restaurants and specialist shops. Classic Wines include wines from the traditionally grown grapes of Alto Adige. Single variety white, rosé and red wines of high quality. Single Vineyard Wines make use of the grapes of selected, individual vineyards, separately vinified. The characteristic features of each particular place and exposure find resonant expression. The ‘beta delta’ wines are made from certified organic grapes from vineyards that are farmed according to biodynamic methods of viticulture (Greek: βios and δinamikòs). Estate Wines are the flagship wines of Alois Lageder. Grapes from exceptional locales and exposures are carefully selected according to rigorous standards. They mature in barriques of French oak into fine, complex wines. Their quantity is limited by nature itself. Read less
