Alois Lageder Pinot Grigio Vigneti Delle Dolomiti 2017

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Tight on the nose with subtle aromas of pressed flowers, citrus pith and pear skin. Fruity with good intensity in the mouth this skirts the limits of a lightweight wine, showing a bit of depth and viscosity on the palate while delivering the classic fresh flavors of crabapple, pear and subtly polleny spice. The finish is edgy and decisive with a touch of astringency that refreshes the palate along with hints of bitter nuts and lemon. This is roughly what Pinot Grigio should be. 88pts

Alois Lageder produces four different groups of wines: Classic Wines, Single Vineyard Wines, Biodynamics and Estate Wines. Alois Lageder’s wines are directed to a quality-conscious public and are available only in better restaurants and specialist shops. Classic Wines include wines from the traditionally grown grapes of Alto Adige. Single variety white, rosé and red wines of high quality. Single Vineyard Wines make use of the grapes of selected, individual vineyards, separately vinified. The characteristic features of each particular place and exposure find resonant expression. The ‘beta delta’ wines are made from certified organic grapes from vineyards that are farmed according to biodynamic methods of viticulture (Greek: βios and δinamikòs). Estate Wines are the flagship wines of Alois Lageder. Grapes from exceptional locales and exposures are carefully selected according to rigorous standards. They mature in barriques of French oak into fine, complex wines. Their quantity is limited by nature itself. Read less

Pear, peach and orchard fruit blossom aromas greet the nose here, followed by a hint of cool iciness and a base of apple cores. On entry, this is vibrantly acid-driven with very pretty and pure pear and crabapple flavors. There’s a hint of rhubarb on the mid-palate, along with some lemon pith and minerality that quickly gain control of the moderately long finish. Light-bodied, cool and crisp, this is a refreshing sipper. 87pts

Product information: The fruit was harvested from various vineyards located in the Trentino appellation. Fermented in stainless steel tanks, the wine was aged on its lees for four months. A nuanced white with complex layers of flowers, spices and hints of smoke. Producer information: The eponymous Alois Lageder winery was founded over 150 years ago in Alto Adige, Italy’s most northern wine growing region. Here Alois Lageder grows grapes on steep Dolomite slopes with varied micro-climates that provide distinct vineyard sites—ideal for producing a wide variety of wines. Alois Lageder produces nearly 30 wines. In 1934, the family acquired the Löwengang estate in Magrè and subsequently acquired other vineyards in prime positions in Alto Adige. Since the 1980s the current, fifth generation Alois Lageder’s innovative ideas and strategies, and pioneering practices such as “quality rather than quantity” have led the movement to improve Alto Adige’s wine industry. Alois Lageder plays a leading role in recognizing and developing Alto Adige’s single vineyard wines. His winemaking philosophy is founded on a holistic approach with the goal of making wines with authentic character while leaving the natural environment as intact as possible for future generations. Alois Lageder wines are produced via sustainable, biodynamic, and organic farming methods and express the many nuances of the region’s microclimates and soils. Alois Lageder practices site-specific viticulture here, where quality starts with the soil, composed of dolomitic rock, glacial moraine and porphry, and slopes range from gentle to steep. The family has 156 acres of vineyards, in addition to fruit purchased from long-term contracted grape farmers on select sites.

Brilliant straw yellow with a green shimmer. Quite pronounced and expressive aroma with flowery and somewhat spicy notes. Rich flavoured in the mouth, with a slight smokiness at the back and a good, fresh finish. When properly cellared, this will drink well for 2 to 4 years. - Winery
