Alois Lageder Pinot Bianco 2017

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Earthy and floral with hints of heather and old wood on the nose along with a bit of quince jelly and some melony top notes. A little trapped CO2 lends this a bit of a prickle on the tongue. It’s a round wine, though one that maintains good focus with mineral flecked and earthy orchard fruit flavors on the bright palate. A bit short on the finish, this remains easy going and with hints of green apple and almost cucumber skin on the palate and growing minerality on the grapefruit pith laced finish. 87pts

Alois Lageder produces four different groups of wines: Classic Wines, Single Vineyard Wines, Biodynamics and Estate Wines. Alois Lageder’s wines are directed to a quality-conscious public and are available only in better restaurants and specialist shops. Classic Wines include wines from the traditionally grown grapes of Alto Adige. Single variety white, rosé and red wines of high quality. Single Vineyard Wines make use of the grapes of selected, individual vineyards, separately vinified. The characteristic features of each particular place and exposure find resonant expression. The ‘beta delta’ wines are made from certified organic grapes from vineyards that are farmed according to biodynamic methods of viticulture (Greek: βios and δinamikòs). Estate Wines are the flagship wines of Alois Lageder. Grapes from exceptional locales and exposures are carefully selected according to rigorous standards. They mature in barriques of French oak into fine, complex wines. Their quantity is limited by nature itself. Read less

Typical of this variety, the nose is muted with some light lemon, peach and cake spice - inviting in a wine suited to warm summer evenings. On the palate, there is a clean, balanced, thirst-quenching purity though without any intervening complexity. Very reminiscent of a lighter style Chardonnay or a typical Canadian Pinot Blanc. A very good wine as expected from this producer and, of course, recommended.

Nice aromas of salty, wet stone. Salty, yeasty flavors on the palate, with lemon pith and a citrusy finish. Bright, bracing, excellent with shellfish.

Sustainable farming technique comes in with creamy nose and crisp palate. Clear - straw yellow on the eye. Simple finish.

A mouthwatering white, showing bright acidity and good focus throughout. The flavors of green pear, crunchy white peach, apple blossom and fresh ginger are underscored by a clean stony note. Drink now through 2016. 4,500 cases made. -AN

The 2009 Pinot Bianco is a very pretty, stylish wine with gorgeous aromatics and expressive, generous fruit. Fresh, refined and polished throughout, this entry-level Pinot Grigio offers terrific quality for the money. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2012.
