Alois Lageder Chardonnay Alto Adige Südtirol Löwengang 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

Alois Lageder is one of Italy's foremost winemakers. Based in the mountainous Alto Adige region in the far north of the country, the vines (which were converted to biodyanmics in 2004) enjoy a long, sunny growing season with warm days and cool nights that help to preserve both the grapes' natural aromas and acidity. The wines themselves are made in a solar-powered state-of-the-art winery. The house style is all about freshness, elegance and purity of fruit. These are finely chiseled wines with real definition, but immense charm too. This Chardonnay shows brilliant, gold yellow with a green shimmer. The aromas effused are very rich, complex, but still quite closed. It is of Burgundian style with a delicate creaminess, some toasty oak and ripe tropical fruit. The palate proves quite rich, with well structured though elegant flavours of vanilla and roasted almonds. The flavours are harmonious, with a pungent, fresh acidity to match the depth of the fruit and the oaky backbone. Under proper storage conditions, this wine's aging potential is at least 6 to 8 years. A rich, creamy and honeyed wine such as this deserves pairing with similarly rich, strong flavoured dishes as seafood with sauces, lobster, white meat and poultry.

Alois Lageder produces four different groups of wines: Classic Wines, Single Vineyard Wines, Biodynamics and Estate Wines. Alois Lageder’s wines are directed to a quality-conscious public and are available only in better restaurants and specialist shops. Classic Wines include wines from the traditionally grown grapes of Alto Adige. Single variety white, rosé and red wines of high quality. Single Vineyard Wines make use of the grapes of selected, individual vineyards, separately vinified. The characteristic features of each particular place and exposure find resonant expression. The ‘beta delta’ wines are made from certified organic grapes from vineyards that are farmed according to biodynamic methods of viticulture (Greek: βios and δinamikòs). Estate Wines are the flagship wines of Alois Lageder. Grapes from exceptional locales and exposures are carefully selected according to rigorous standards. They mature in barriques of French oak into fine, complex wines. Their quantity is limited by nature itself. Read less
