Alma Rosa Pinot Noir Santa Rita Hills Sta. Rita Hills 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

Recommended Wine: Alma Rosa 2005 Pinot Noir La Encantada Winemaker Tasting Notes: The "Encantada" shows quintessential Pinot Noir characteristics of cherry-berry fruit, brown spice, a little forest-floor earthiness and a thought-provoking deep, dark complexity... still a happy wine but showing a more serious side as well... Winter-y soups and stews; hearty braises; anything using black truffles, or wild mushrooms; Sunday-night roasts, etc. Return to Alma Rosa Wine List

Pioneer winegrowers in the Sta. Rita Hills AVA since 1970, Thekla and Richard Sanford have left their namesake winery and are pleased to present the wines from their winery, Alma Rosa Winery & Vineyards. With over 38 years experience winegrowing in this region, their energies will continue to be focused on excellence in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and feel this new beginning gives them a greater opportunity to honor the unmistakable relationship between the healthiness of the soil, the energy of the vines, and ultimately the soul of the wine. “For over 20 years, my wife Thekla and I have focused on what’s most important to us: sustainable business practices and organic farming. We are deeply committed to the environment and the soulful connection with our employees and the people who enjoy our wine.” says Richard. With over 100 acres of certified organic estate vineyards in the Sta. Rita Hills AVA (the first vineyards to be certified in Santa Barbara County) Alma Rosa Winery offers Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc in addition to their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Their acclaimed Pinot Noir Vin-Gris (as seen in the movie Sideways) is also available. With a vision for a viable agricultural future and an environment that is safe for our children, Richard and Thekla and the staff at Alma Rosa Winery hope to continue to bring our customers together to share good food, good times and great wine. Big and jammy on the nose with a strong, raw wood tone. The fruit in the mouth is thick and sweet in a popular style and married vegetal notes with a bright red currant fruit tone. On the finish there was a sweet nuttiness that contrasted somewhat against the sweet, candied fruit. Interested but I don't know where this is headed. Drink 2009-2012 87pts

Raspberry, rhubarb, and spice aromas and flavors. Turns a touch candied on the finish, but there is nice balance and complexity in this wine.

This was fantastic. Aromas and flavors of brown sugar, cherry, eucalyptus, and pine. Lots of complexity in the finish, with earth and spice notes added.

With enticing aromas of lavender and berry, this is rich, supple and elegant on the palate, with a vibrancy to the fruit and a suppleness to the texture. Long and fruity on the finish. Drink now through 2011.

This is a California Pinot Noir at its finest! Richard Sanford, founder of Sanford Winery, is the producer of this exquisite Pinot Noir from the Santa Rita Hills. The wine has a beautiful floral nose and is ruby red in color. Delicate nuances of strawberry and raspberry dance upon onersquo;s palate, ending with a long and luscious finish. Medium-bodied with a hint of spice, it is balanced and rounded out with soft tannins. Alma Rosa Winery amp; Vineyards practices and promotes organic farming, sustainable agriculture, ecologically-responsible packaging and green building. Pair this wine with blackened snapper or baked ham with spiced apples. Fabulous!

Deep red. Smoky oak and black raspberry on the nose. Lively red berry flavors are firmed by juicy acidity and given depth by a slow-building dark chocolate quality. The finish features an interesting Campari-like bitterness and a lingering note of cracked pepper. Not a particularly easy style, but nicely suited to strongly seasoned red meat dishes.

A dry, herbal style, with chewy tannins and a glimmer of ripe cherry and blueberry fruit that finishes with a mineral and pebble aftertaste. Drink now through 2008.

Surprisingly, the generic 2005 Pinot Noir Santa Rita Hills is even more complex, displaying additional notes of beet roots, forest floor, and sweet cherries. This well-made, medium-bodied Pinot possesses excellent fruit, spice, earth, and subtle herb and smoke characteristics. It, too, should be consumed over the next 5andndash;6 years.
