Medium ruby. Red cherry, dark plum, caramel, and floral aromas. Medium-plus acidity, medium tanins, medium-plus intensity, medium-plus body, and high alcohol (14.5%). Maraschino cherry and well integrated oak on the palate. Long, earthy finish.

So tonight being the 100th anniversary of the last dinner aboard the RMS Titanic, I thought it might be interesting to honor the tragedy with a dinner and bottle of wine that hearkens back to those days when technology and industry seemed to hold all the answers for mankind (where have I heard that before?). So I thought about recreating the menu, but I have to admit I had neither the desire nor inclination toward creating a 12-course dinner for myself tonight, so that seems out, though you know whatever I have will be good. Then I searched the web trying to find a list of wines served on Titanic, and perhaps I might have a current vintage, or even a similar wine, like a Bordeaux or Burgundy, but alas there is very little detail on the wines served on board. Delicious, dry and soft. Licorice predominant on nose. Spicy red fruit on palatte. Medium body. Ate with fennel meatballs and pasta. Will look for this again!

The 2008 Palazzo Della Torre is striking in this vintage. It shows remarkable harmony in a tense, mineral-infused expression of fruit. Hints of licorice, tobacco, mocha and spices develop in the glass, adding further complexity and nuance. All of the elements flow gracefully to a finish layered with the essence of crushed rocks and flowers. This is an absolutely delicious wine from Allegrini. Palazzo della Torre is made with a partial ripasso technique in which 30% of the fruit is dried Amarone-style, while the other 70% is picked and vinified conventionally. Once again, Palazzo della Torre is one of the very finest values in Italian wine. Anticipated maturity: 2012andndash;2020.

A blend of grapes including traditional Corvina and Rondinella undergoes air-drying for extra-rich concentration and intensity. That, with careful oak aging, has shaped a richly textured, dense wine that would pair with game meat or bean soup with smoked bacon. It shows raw, slightly chewy tannins on the close.

This Veneto red is glorious and rich, yet sophisticated. Dark ruby in color, it emits aromas of raisins and berries, with hints of cocoa and spice. Itrsquo;s full-bodied, with chewy yet velvety tannins and a long, long finish. Best after 2001.
