What to Expect

Corvina is one of the classic grapes of the Veneto region of Italy. It is usually the predominant grape in the blends used for Bardolino and Valpolicella. Corvina tends to produce lightly-colored wines with high acidity and moderate tannins featuring flavors that recall dark berries with hints of bitter almond. Corvina's thick skins lends the grape to rasining without rot. This technique is used to produce richer and dessert styled wines such as Amarone and Recioto.

Winemakers Notes

The Allegrini family estate encompasses 70 hectares of vineyard situated in the heart of the Valpolicella Classico area. The Allegrini family have been growing grapes in Valpolicella for several generations, though the estate in its current form was founded by Giovanni Allegrini. When he died in 1983, the estate passed to his three children who ran it together until Walter’s death in July 2003. Franco now looks after the vineyards and is the winemaker, and Marilisa is director of marketing. The soils are varied, but mostly chalky, stony and well-drained. The older vines are 30 years old on average, pergola trentina trained, with about 3,000 vines per hectare. Newer vines have also been planted which are single Guyot trained with about 5,000 vines per hectares. Grapes for the Amarone are hand harvested during the second half of September and are allowed to dry naturally for about 100 days at ‘Terre di Fumane’, a state of the art drying centre where both temperature and humidity are controlled. By drying the grapes under these conditions, the development of botrytis is avoided, and the integrity of the fruit is preserved. During the drying period the grapes lose 40-45% of their original weight. This delightful Amarone is deep ruby in colour, with a warm and spicy bouquet of characteristic dried cherries and raisins. Well-structured, complex, elegant and velvety on the palate with plenty of fine fruit character and toasty oak. Intense and powerful finish.    (hide)
