What to Expect

Petite Sirah is one of a group of grapes that took to a new home - in this case California - after moving from the relative obscurity enjoyed at its birthplace - France in this case - where it is called Duriff. While never particularly elegant nor subtle, Petite Sirah can produce large-scaled, intense wines with bright flavors of blue and plummy fruits, rich with earthy tannins.

Editorial Reviews

Plummy and spicy on the nose with a laid back yet fruit driven quality. A bit apply even with faint spice notes, a little smoke, a little rust, smells quite Syrah like. Round and well balanced in the mouth with both the acid and tannin being fairly well subsumed in the fruit, though there is a shortage of neither. The fruit is complex and a bit earthy with dark yet not sweet berry fruit, earth, mineral, a touch of stemminess, big and dark and just a little mean and tarry, Great ripe fruit lurks within and emerges on the long finish which is particularly rich in chewy fruit tannins. Hot licorice nose, low in acid but high in tannins. There are some characteristic light flowery notes which then moves through bitter cherry to a leathery finish.

Deep black cherry and blackberry fruit flavors, good smooth mouthfeel, nice oak, perky tannins. A good wine.

As with most Petite the inky color is a tip off to a big, burly wine. Dark Berrys with hint of bell pepper on nose, leads to a tart, earthy (silt-like) dark & spicy Black Tea like fruits, with black pepper and oak.

Liked it a little better this time, at least in the aroma. Very rich and fruity, pine trees, chicken stock, lavender, bacon. Strong mouth with citrus and tannins, smoked meats.

A little gamey on the nose. Very sweet and coating on the roof of my mouth. Well balanced, but a little too sweet for my taste.
