Aldo Conterno Barolo 2011

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Wow wild cherry, menthol, rose petal, a touch of exotic fruit, pomegranate maybe with a hint of India ink all greet the nose with power and clarity. In the mouth this is pretty easy going with lots of pretty fresh yet simple if juicy, red fruits. There’s a nice tannic finish here with tons of licorice flavors and this is awfully well behaved, holding its alcohol very well at 15.3%. This is a bit Barolo-lite in a way, but this is very true to type and enjoyable, tart cherry, raspberry and plum notes with hints of rosehips and dried citrus rinds adding some detail to the inner mouth perfumes. This is a very fruity Barolo. 89pts

Sweet raspberry fruit, almost a touch of cream, high-toned, fresh, slightly gamy, spicy sandalwood, fresh a bit dull though, fine tannins. A bit diffuse on the mid-palate, nice structured feel on the back palate, a bit compressed, crisp tannin, fine finish, a bit dry but gains focus. Should improve.

Younger vines, up to 15-20 years of age, go into this 100% Nebbiolo wine that is aged for 18 months in 100% new barrique. This opens with intense and characteristic aromas of Nebbiolo, a touch of tamarind then floral top notes, slightly dried cherry fruit, and a hint of menthol but also has obvious wood tones of spice, toast and vanilla, which are balanced. The acidity pops out on entry followed by well managed tannins in a medium bodied package that offers up dark fruit with a touch of peachy overtones some herbal freshness and layers of medicinal spice and aromatic roots. With air the Nebbiolo tannins pop on the mid-palate offering more focus and mouthgrab that leads to a clean, fresh finish, which shows the fruit sweetening a bit. 88pts

Aged 12-15 months in 100% New Barriques The aromatics are intense here with immediate cigar box notes of feral, earthy tones. The fruit has a subtle foxy edge to the red plum/baked plum fruit but there is a spike of dark wood spice and ample tones of vanilla and baking spices. Bright acids right up front are refreshing and accentuate the red plum and bright wild berry fruit on the mid-palate. Elegant and balanced with a touch of minerality that balances the fruit and drives the cleansing acids of the finish. Just a touch of tannin becomes obvious on the finish with its jolly rancher cherry and watermelon tones ending on a touch of vanilla and cigar box. A nice Barbera with tons of ripe acids keeping everything lively and fresh but weighed down just a touch by the wood. 87pts

AWE blind tasting - jammy, pencil shavings, some animale, furry, reticent, a bit ungenerous, and dried out, there’s a sweetness here but not terribly fruity nor varietal, very savory, turns better on the finish, nice tannins ripe tannins, refreshing finish, clean, a small wine 86-87

Intensely perfumed in the glass with musky, porcini top notes and a deep forest floor underlay. There is a touch of deisel fume that whafts in and out but the sharp, intense fruits sweet and ripe with an edge of apricot to the red berry notes. This marries big power with elegance and presents intense wild strawberry fruit that is edged with spice and nettle tones. The mid-palate lacks a bit of depth and the finish is clipped by the youthful tannins but this does end on wonderfully sweet fruit and cracking tannins. 93pts

Very direct and focused on the nose with cherry in alcohol, a touch of beet root, bright woodsy tones of angelica root, nettle and soil notes with building strawberry fruit and a flourish of rose 3+ Grippy tannins and strong acidity frame the ripe fruit but the wine remains very elegant 3 Richly flavored in the mouth with wild cherry fruit edged with sandlewood, orange blossom and green herbal tones. Great mineral/limestone cut through the midpalate 3 Very brisk and long on the finish with fresh berry fruit, plum skin and a final of nettle and arugula 3 95pts

Honestly, I don’t get all the hype. The nose showed red fruit, undergrowth and a bit of toast. On the palate I found strawberry, cooked orange like marmalade and tar but felt that it lost its heft on the mid-palate and ended feeling linier, restrained and a bit alcoholic. Possibly this is just the stage of its life but certainly not performing very well at the moment.

[Gotham] Not decanted . . . obviously a mistake. Drank over 1 hr . . . another mistake. Started very lively . . but then vlosed down. Aromos of rose petals and tar. On the palate tar and tobacco wirh minimal red fruit, Smooth. I was not ovewhelmed the experience. but I did not treat the wine approproiately.

The 2010 Barolo Bussia is gorgeous and super-classic in every way. Dark red cherry plum spice new leather and tobacco are some of the many notes that take shape in the glass. The 2010 is a beautiful version of the Bussia with less of the approachability of some previous vintages but tons of potential for the future. There is a lot to look forward to here. This is one of the best versions of the Bussia I can remember tasting. The 2010 stands out for its precision and crystalline purity. Read

Bright full red. Initially shy nose opened quickly to show highly complex musky aromas of strawberry raspberry minerals rose petal and truffle. Silky juicy suave and brilliantly delineated with bracing red berry flavors lifted by a high note of blood orange. Slightly higher in acidity and more cerebral than the 2009 version this energetic midweight should enjoy a graceful evolution in bottle. Stephen Tanzers IWC.

This really elegant and refined with super-fine tannins and a pretty finish. Medium to full body. Fresh finish. Very mineral. Better in 2017. James Suckling.

The next Granbussia is the 2005 which will be released in 2012. Conterno s 2007 Barolo impresses for its sense of harmony and freshness. The wine has firmed up nicely since I first tasted it in November 2010 boding well for its development in the cellar. In 2007 the Barolo possesses an extra degree of richness and generosity than is typically the case never a bad thing for an entry-level bottling. In a few years the soft supple fruit should be at the height of its expression. This is a jewel of a wine and a huge outperformer in relative terms. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027.
