Alban Vineyards Viognier Central Coast 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

Robert Parker: "One of the pioneers of world-class Rhone varietal-based wines produced in California's Central Coast" John Alban had the courage and foresight to plant Viognier in a region where no one else believed these grapes would thrive. His wines offer off-the-chart levels of concentration.....These flavor-filled wines are all made from frightfully low yields. The results are wines that are nearly beyond belief in terms of richness and density. These are true artisanal wines..."

Winemaker John Alban is credited with being one of the first Californians to plant the Rhone varietals Viognier, Rousanne, and Syrah in 1989. His successful pioneering efforts led the way for the California Rhone Ranger movement and have since been a significant source for these varietals for other winemakers and his own Alban Vineyards label. He sources Mourvedre and Grenache from Paso Robles where hotter conditions are more conducive to growing those grapes. Apart from white and red single varietal releases and blends, Alban also produces a dessert wine with botrytis grapes called Rotten Luck. Read less

Flowers, honey, lime zest, pear and stony minerality. Bright and silky on the palate with stone fruit, white flowers and light spice. Peach dominated fruit. Very tasty! 92 pts. 11/10/12

Sweet and inviting nose of pear and lime. Medium weight mouth feel, notes of minerals. Reminded me of Chardonnay. Tasted at Marche Bacchus 11/10/12
