Alana Estate Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

The site of Alana Estate was purchased in 1993. Literally on the edge of the now famed Martinborough Terrace, Alana Estate's 55 acres are blessed with free-draining gravelly soils and a sun-exposed aspect that has consistently produced wines of outstanding quality and individuality. One of the most encouraging signs from the Alana vineyard and especially the Sauvignon Blanc is the consistency of fruit expression. This is highlighted by the attention to detail in the vineyard with cropping levels (approx 4 tonnes/acre), fruit exposure with leaf plucking and attention to high quality hand training during the growing season. The fruit handling with hand picking and whole bunch pressing allows the wine to be light and elegant; this pushes forward the mineral citrus expression of the place, and creates a style that works with food and bottle ages well.

The winery is of a gravity flow design with three distinctive levels. The top floor is used for red fruit sorting, de-stemming and small tank farm. The second floor contains all the red fermentation vats, air bag press and laboratory. The bottom floor contains our oak maturation cellar. The cellar is extremely versatile allowing many small batch winemaking which is necessary to contain the subtle nuance from our 17 hectare property. Read less
