Alamos Seleccion Mendoza Malbec Red Alamos 2008
The 2008 Selección Malbec shows an opaque, dark violet color. The nose is full of ripe blueberry fruits wit notes of violets and sweet spice. The mouthfeel is full and rich with ripe black cherry and cassis fruit layered with notes of wildflowers, spicy black pepper and anis. The finish shows a supple silky texture with a bright racy acidity and a stony minerality.
Decent wine at a great price. Very bright spice, with a lighter fruity body. A standard wine.
This is a standard in my collection. Easy drinking wine with a good spice at the back end and with enough body to make it interesting without overpowering.
This was my first Malbec that wasn't part of a blend. I ordered a glass at a Cuban restaurant to go with picadillo, a ground beef dish. It went very well with the beef, adding a sweetness to the beef. I've also sampled Alamos' Torrontes white and found it to be excellent, so I presumed (and correctly so) that the Malbec would also be good. Another reviewer suggested that it might improve with age, so I think I'll put a sticky note on a bottle to say "hold until 2012" and see how it does.
My rating 86. Dry full bodied with plenty of tannis. Nose balanced with some complex fruit flavors. Good deal for a mainstream Malbec
1st) Violet, grassy, dank red beef and dirt nose (not unpleasant). Mild approach for a malbec, balanced, medium finish. Leather and oak, not a lot of fruit. Velvet tannins that stay with you long after the finish is gone. Wine making has made this wine too approachable to be a typical Mendoza, oriented towards mass market, which is reflected in it's price of $9.95. 2nd) Initial tasting was a little cold. Picking up a little more fruit and balanced taste. Good for 1/2 more point.
If you drink Malbec, this should definitely be on your list. You almost cannot go wrong with Alamos. The 2008 is very well-rounded malbec and for a great price. Typical malbec-y deep purple color and strong violet/berry aroma. Nice tannins and a really elegant sort of dryness on the back of the tongue that lingers. Unlike some inexpensive malbecs, this has a lovely finish. Granted, there are better expressions of malbec out there, but this is above the average. You must keep a bottle or two around.
WOW my first Malbec. I liked it very much. This wine has a thin viscosity, with hints of cherry, and melon. Wonderful aromas. I paid $9 for 9 oz.

The palate is big and bold but controlled, with compact, intense flavors of berry, leather and black tea. Smooth on the finish, with soft, integrated tannins and just enough acidity to maintain freshness. Drink this year."90 Points - Wine & Spirits "If you enjoy wines with the sweet ripeness of black fruit, the type of wines that offer the kind of full-bodied intensity and depth of flavor that is right at home in a steakhouse, this malbec is one of the better representatives of the style."Winemaker's notes: The 2008 Alamos Seleccion Malbec shows an opaque, dark violet color.
