One would be hard pressed to find a wine that is this structured and sophisticated for less than $20. The nose has some blackberry and mint, and on the palate there are lots of red raspberries, black cherry and some herbs. The backbone and elegance of this wine really make it one of the best deals in the store right now. Pick it up and serve with hearty meats or just fun. Catena has done it again.

The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon spent nine months in French and American oak. Purple-colored, it reveals aromas of cedar, spice box, cassis, and black currant. On the palate it is medium-bodied with ample savory fruit, good depth, and a medium-long finish. Drink it over the next 2-3 years.

Wine Tasting NotesThe Alamos Cabernet Sauvignon presents a dark purple color with garnet tones. The nose is explosive, with red fruit flavors, sweet spice and a touch of fresh mint. The mouthfeel is full yet soft, with red currant and cassis fruit layered with notes of cigar box, leather and light notes of eucalyptus. The finish is focused, with finely grained tannins adding structure and length.

This is packed with plenty of cassis, plum and blackberry fruit, along with lots of sweet, caressing toast as well. Slightly firm finish should flesh out soon enough, as there is lots of gutsy fruit here. Drink now through 2005.

Good medium ruby-red. Pure, varietally precise aromas of black cherry, bitter chocolate and licorice. Fairly broad and pliant but not overly sweet, offering flavors of raspberry, licorice, herbs and menthol. Showing a bit more structure than the Alamos merlot if not quite the same sweetness.

Full-bodied, with blueberry aromas that lead to ripe plum and blackberry flavors. A nice balance of tannins and acidity gives it a serious edge.
