Alain Voge:

Since its inception, several generations ago, Domaine Alain Voge has always been a family domain located in Cornas. In 1958, Alain Voge joins his father to work in the small typical farm. He decides to specialise in wine. At this time, this is an audacious decision: despite their history, the CORNAS and SAINT PERAY appellations are forgotten sleeping beauties. Very quickly, Alain overthrows habits. He extends his vineyards in places which had remained uncultivated over the last 30 years and develops the sales of his bottled wines. Supported by his wife Eliane, he visits the best national and regional restaurants to make his wines known. Thanks to their quality and to Alain Voge’s creative approach, the domain’s reputation rapidly increases. Yesterday, as today and tomorrow, our philosophy is to practice a hand made viticulture on the slopes of the Rhône right bank, dedicated to Syrah and Marsanne. Our wines are the expression of their terroir, for the pleasure of lovers, all over the world. Read less

The newest baby, the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes, is a blend of 50% Grenache, 40% Mourvedre, and 10% Syrah. All of these wines are from the estate’s three major holdings in the northern part of the appellation, on the high plateau of Mont Redon and Cabrieres, and in the northeastern sector, near Beaucastel. The 2007 Vieilles Vignes represents the essence of Chateauneuf du Pape. Inky/purple to the rim, with extraordinary full-bodied aromas of roasted porcini, meat juices, blackberries, cassis, smoke, and grilled herbs, it is intense to the point of almost over-extraction, but it has no rough edges. It possesses great purity, an amazing texture, and a massive, full-bodied finish with noticeable tannin. Because of its high percentage of Mourvedre and Syrah, it requires 6–7 years of bottle age, and should keep for 30–35 years.

Very ripe and forward, with flashy fig, mocha and licorice notes pushed by sweet toast and spice. Round and juicy through the full-bodied finish, with the fruit hanging on nicely. Drink now through 2020.

Bright purple. Exotically perfumed bouquet of ripe raspberry, boysenberry and cherry, with complicating notes of cola, sassafras and star anise. Deep, juicy dark fruit flavors provide impressive palate coverage and are braced by zesty minerality. The dark berry and cola notes resonate on the long, focused finish. This is already appealing but seems built to age.

Saturated purple. Stunning bouquet of mineral-laced raspberry, boysenberry and potpourri, with a strong note of licorice emerging with air. Deep and sweet but energetic, showing powerful red and black fruit flavors and a strong underpinning of graphite and iron. The boysenberry note recurs on the finish, which is strikingly pure, focused and long.
