Exhibiting a saturated ruby/purple color as well as a big, sweet nose revealing a surprising amount of oak, the 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Les Origines is a full-bodied, chewy, layered, large-scaled, low acid, concentrated offering. This open-knit Chateauneuf veers toward the more modern, international style of winemaking, but it unquestionably possesses all the typicity of Chateauneuf du Pape. Drink it over the next 12ndash;14 years.
Jaw-dropping raspberry ganache and plum fruit, along with cocoa, tar, hoisin sauce and mineral notes, are flamboyantly displayed, while an intense tarry, minerally drive extends the finish. Best from 2007 through 2025.
Alain Jaume manages the Grand Veneur domaine with his two sons, Seacute;bastien and Christophe. The domaine was founded in 1826 by Mathieu Jaume and includes 37 acres in Chacirc;teauneuf-du-Pape. This 2003 is a blend of estate fruit and is made up of 40 percent Grenache and 30 percent each of Syrah and Mourvegrave;dre, with yields kept at between 1.5 tons per acre and 2.25 tons per acre.
The 2003 Chacirc;teauneuf du Pape Les Origines is dazzling stuff and one of the vintagersquo;s top efforts. Deep purple to the rim with a gorgeous nose of blackberry liqueur intermixed with blueberries, smoke, licorice, roasted meats, and herbs, with wine has fabulous concentration, a multi-layered mid-palate, and a blockbuster finish with sweet tannin and plenty of opulence. Drink it over the next 12ndash;14 years.
Ruby-red color. Intensely aromatic nose offers potent garrigue scents along with notes of jammy cherry, raw meat, fresh tobacco, bay laurel, licorice and sexy oak spices. Big, dense and sweet, showing intense dark berry flavors with complicating earthy and herbal accents. Focused, concentrated and long mdash; and lovely right now.
