Alain Graillot Crozes-Hermitage la Guiraude 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

"Denser, with more blackberry fruit such as well as hints of licorice and cassis, the medium to full-bodied, wonderfully pure, dense 2009 Crozes-Hermitage is a winner and a big-time sleeper of the vintage. This rich, full, multi-layered wine should drink well for 10-15 years. 2009 is Alain Graillot’s finest vintage since 1990...90" WA 2/11

Rich and spicy on the nose with dark brambly fruit and incipient notes of black pepper, leather, violets and wood smoke all over a nice crushed granite base note. On entry, this is big and smooth with very fine, polished tannins and solid acidity keeping the broad palate impression lively and supporting sweet and sour wild berry fruit. The tannins build on the back end here, a little rustic and dusty, but this manages to retain an elegant, almost feminine feel. This will improve, particularly in light of Graillot’s track record. 88pts

Intensely balsamic on the nose with spicy floral notes, rampant violets, intense pepper and sweet spices. This is aromatic insanity! Light bodied and high acid for sure, with very soft tannins in a dry, austere, focused and crisp package. This is brilliant It’s so lean and sinewy it doesn’t strike me as particularly typical, but it’s got such great clarity that I love it. It’s going through a funky period I’m sure, but this is exciting to drink. Group’s sixth place wine, my first place. 92pts

Very fine on the nose with superb purity to the syrah fruit with blackberry, floral/herbal nuance, granitic minerality and a touch of wood. Very well balanced in the mouth with bright red fruits given good thrust by the bright, juicy acids, finishes a bit short and tight at this point with lovely cranberry fruit in a lean, sinewy package. There is good stuffing here but it is tightly wound. 92pts

Dark brambly fruit, spice, green spice and pepper, young. Would like to try again in 3-5 years.

Enjoyed this bold Syrah at NoMad in September 2013. The following review of the 2008 by another member (Nicki Gig) applies to this 2011: "Red raspberry and red spices, red currant aromas Nice acidity, peppery palate, nice red fruit."

Very earthy throughout, with only a touch of heat. A lot of funk with hints of tart cherry. Interesting pairing with cote de boeuf @ Minetta Tavern.

Cedar and deep berry fruit on the nose, bramble fruit and chewy tannins kept me interested, and the semi-spicy finish was nice.

Exceptionally smooth and earthly. Without being crass and or crude, my first impression of this wine was that it had a smell of earth and sex.

I had no such issues with the 2012 Crozes Hermitage and it has a classic feel in its beautiful dark fruit, ground pepper and damp earth-driven bouquet. Medium to full-bodied, supple, elegant and beautifully balanced, drink it over the coming 7–8 years.

Inky ruby. Pungent, deeply scented aromas of black raspberry, cassis, black pepper and violet. Fruity, supple and sweet, with energetic red and dark berry flavors and a suggestion of candied licorice. Finishes with gentle grip and spicy thrust, the violet note echoing.

Alain Graillot has 20 hectares in the Crozes-Hermitage. He has become one of the most sought after producers of the area, producing wines that are pure and balanced from the Syrah grape. Very small productions.

Coming from Alain Graillot, the Guiraude is a barrel selection from the 20 hectare plot in the Croze-Hermitage. Dark, brambly fruit, lively tannins, and black pepper finish. This is Croze-Hermitage at its best!
