Adelsheim Pinot Gris 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

What a wonderful nose with layered notes of apple butter, hazelnuts, sandy soil, subtle spice with a suggestion of vanilla and touch of raspberry. Restrained and light on the palate with complex flavors that have some power behind them but aren’t really fruit driven. There are nice earth and underlying spice tones over which are layered dried fruits with zesty acidity refreshing the mouth. The finish shows crisp white orchard fruits with great length and energy. A lovely, expressive wine. 91pts

David Adelsheim first planted the grapes of northern Europe in Oregon’s Willamette Valley in 1972 because he believed that fine and distinctive wine could be created in the cool climate of this unknown place. As the industry advanced, he realized that this new region could only succeed if all its growers and winemakers aimed for the highest quality… and he led the collaborative charge to achieve that goal by writing Oregon’s labeling regulations, setting up the system for importing grapevine clones from Europe, and helping found most of the organizations and events that define the industry. Today a new generation of passionate Adelsheim staff continues the tradition of leadership of the Oregon industry in areas such as sustainability, marketing of brand Oregon, grape and wine research, and the ongoing evolution of wine style.  In our vineyards and winery, we merge traditional and modern techniques to craft wines that are elegant, complex, rich, age-worthy, yet consistently alluring. Full-bodied with a hint of spice, buttery more than fruity, the dominant fruit that comes through is like a tart Granny Smith apple, but complex enough to be described with subtler flavors, ginger, some bitter flavors.

A nice pinot gris with much more flavor than you usually find.

A pale, green-yellow color with a delicate aroma of apricots, pears, and hints of dried flowers. While the taste is not as complex as some pinot gris, it is well-balanced- some zippy acidity, a bit of mineral taste, citrus, and melons. There is a nice long finish that is crisp and slightly tangy (lemons).

filled with floral and peach aromas with some pear and honeysuckle as well. The palate showcases more fruit flavors such as melons, wonderful length and paired beautifully with the cheese, Von Trapp Oma, a sharp acidic but buttery cow's milk cheese. I enjoyed this pairing

What's New in Booze - 9.1 out of 10 In this 2007 vintage you find delicate aromas of pear, peach and apple skins that lead you to a refreshing palate with just the right amount of acidity that keeps it light and lively. Flavors of nectarine, citrus and melons show through nicely with just a touch of minerality. The finish is surprisingly creamy which lends a mouth filling texture and extends the finish longer than you would expect from a wine that starts off so crisp and clean.

Very light and crispy. Would be enjoyed on a nice summery day in a park with some cheese and baguette!

Winemaker Notes - Crisp, bright flavors have always been the hallmark of Adelsheim Pinot gris. In this 2009, you ll find hints of papaya, apples and pears. It pulls off the difficult feat of providing a gentle creaminess that lends a rich, mouthfilling texture and long finish, yet still impressing as a wine that s crisp and clean. Try it with mildly spicy foods (such as ceviche), not so mildly spicy Thai cuisine, rich fish entrees, and even classic oven-roasted fowl.
