What to Expect

Argentina, and in particular the region around Mendoza, is making a name for itself as the source of some of the finest expressions of Malbec ever made. In this warm, yet dry climate the Malbec achieves near perfect ripeness endowing the wines with a velvety texture and intense flavors of blackberry, peppery spice, and balsamic herbs. The cooler, well-drained slopes of the hillsides of the region have proven to be ideally suited for Malbec, allowing for the wines to achieve a level of complexity and harmony that rivals those of Napa or Bordeaux.

Another bruiser from trusty AF--unlike the more immediately accessible Altamira, this one for lying down and waiting...say until your kid has graduated college, or at the very least high school. Extreme concentration from ruthless vine pruning and a reflection of the dessication factor found at the altitude at which it is grown. Prunes, pencil shavings, leather in a tumult of wine nowhere near settling down or drinkable. Unlike the 2004, which still wild at heart is perhaps a decade away from maturity, this one is like the '96 barolos--terrific potential for aging but is a long-term prospect read more...

"The glories of Achaval-Ferrer are the limited production single-vineyard Malbecs. Compared to the 2004, the 2005 Finca Mirador Malbec is more dense and austere. It is likely to have a longer drinking window...94" WA 12/07

Holy crap! I had no idea malbec had this side to it. I was slack-jawed for the rest of the evening, and we had the Finca Altamira and Cheval des Andes too.
The complexity is mind-numbing, and the wine just made me think of the entire Mendoza dessert aromatics: the shrubs, the herbs and the dirt.
I promise this wine will change the way you see malbec. Lose yourself in a (big) glass of this.
