Food Pairings for Achával-Ferrer Malbec Mendoza Finca Bella Vista
Editorial Reviews for Achával-Ferrer Malbec Mendoza Finca Bella Vista
Vivid violet color and almost opaque in the glass. This opens with intensely floral and tropical fruited notes and a touch of raw, black pepper studded bacon. A touch syrah like then a rush of freshly crushed wild raspberry greets the nose with an underlay of vanilla crème that is barely noticeable. In the mouth this is bright and vivid with blazing purity of fruit. Perhaps this lacks a touch of complexity but the wine feels very fine and energetic in the mouth with juicy acids and superbly polished tannins driving the wonderful berried fruit with a nuance of juniper spice. Finishes long and mouth cleansing with excellent clarity. 92pts
Started with a nice hint of pears, juiciness and a slight touch of acetone (similar to overripe Asian pears). Secondary notes of butter, vanilla and even lychee. The more I drank, I started noticing a nice smokiness and a hint of tobacco toe the flavors. It was a real pleasure being able to enjoy this Malbec.

The 2007 Finca Bella Vista is the first bottling of this cuvee since the 2004 vintage because 2005 and 2006 were wiped out by hail. The Bella Vista vineyard was planted in 1910 with yields for this wine at a miniscule 0.75 tons per acre. The wine was aged for 15 months in 100% new French oak. A glass-coating opaque purple, it offers up an alluring bouquet of smoke, scorched earth, incense, violets, black cherry, and blackberry. Medium- to full-bodied, velvety-textured, and surprisingly forward, this voluptuous effort has gobs of layered sweet fruit, earth and spice notes, plenty of concealed fine grained tannin, and a lengthy finish. The temptation will be to drink this hedonistic effort without delay. However, it will reward extended cellaring and should be at its best from 2013 to 2022. Very dense but supersleek, with gorgeous boysenberry and raspberry confiture notes stitched together by melted licorice, black tea and fruitcake notes. The long finish just glides along despite its obvious weight. Shows impressive precision and balance. Drink now through 2015. 753 cases made. -JM (old-vines malbec; like the Finca Mirador, this is from a crop level of just 14 hectoliters per hectare) Saturated bright ruby. Very ripe aromas of blackberry and licorice. Broad, sweet and lush: the richest and most generous of the three 2007 single-vineyard bottlings, with a strong chocolatey character to the layered blackberry and spicecake flavors. As substantial as this is, it also boasts terrific cut. Very long on the aftertaste, with lush, seamless tannins.
The 2007 Finca Mirador was sourced from a 13-acre parcel in Medrano planted in 1921. The yields for this wine were 0.9 tons per acre with the wine aged for 15 months in new French oak. Purple-colored with a superb display of toasty new oak, lilacs, spice box, black cherry, and black raspberry, on the palate it sports an elegant personality, savory flavors, underlying structure, and a lengthy, 45-second finish. It, too, will drink well from 2013 to 2022. Intriguing, with a piercing violet and mineral entry backed by superracy acidity that lets the crushed blueberry, plum and blackberry fruit stretch out on the very long, mouthwatering finish. Best from 2010 through 2015. 1,000 cases made. -JM (all old-vines malbec) Good full ruby. Deeper and wilder on the nose than the Altamira, offering soil-driven notes of blackberry, licorice and violet. Dense and sweet but light on its feet, with a strong floral character and bright acidity cutting through the wine's density of texture. Finishes with a tannic spine that calls for patience.
Gorgeous aromas of crushed plum and fig lead the way for this very dense but remarkably supple offering, loaded with additional blackberry and boysenberry fruit, all laid over Turkish coffee, violet, pastis, licorice and charred mesquite notes.
Super-perfumed with aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, floral notes, and mineral that is already revealing complexity. The wine is impeccably balanced, has an elegant personality despite its size, layers of flavor, and a very lengthy finish.
A barrel sample of the 2007 Finca Mirador reveals a wine with darker fruit, outstanding concentration, impeccable balance, and a sense of elegance.
