Achaval Ferrer 2006

Member Review by Melaney:

This wine kicked off a girls' weekend, and it was perfect with an aged manchego & some balsamic fig preserves. Very young so it needs to breathe a while, but it packs a wallop! If you like a an in-your-face red, look no further.

We interpreted that Argentina's quality potential could be pushed to levels in line with the extreme personality of its soil, its plentiful sunshine and the rarity of its ancient ungrafted vineyards, almost an exclusivity in today's world of viticulture. This dark, extracted wine possesses a smoky, peppery bouquet redolent of blackberry compote and bacon fat. That bacon fat note leads off the palate, but quickly gives way to ripe and rich black cherry flavors, with some mocha spice, oak and cardamom peeking in near the finish. Long, lush, rich and concentrated, the aftertaste dances with toast and a faint streak of mineral. New York strip, medium-rare please! (91 points)

Very interesting wine. Light to medium bodied. Smokey, almost oak like taste with a hint of silky chocolate. Very smooth and balanced. Flavors will certainly surprise you and bewilder you. The length is pleasant and adequate. One of the best red's I've had in my short wine career (I'm 21).

Stunning nose, with a high-toned violet note running through waves of warm blueberry, fig, boysenberry and raspberry compote. Intense palate is superracy, with superb underlying minerality driving the fruit through a long, seamless finish. Flaunts po... Wine Spectator. A Malbec wine from Mendoza in Argentina. 2006 Achaval Ferrer Finca Mirador 750ml
