Abeja Syrah Walla Walla Valley 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

SYRAH WALLA WALLA VALLEY One hundred percent estate grown Cases Produced: 200-300 Vintages: 2003, 2004, 2005 (2007 release) The fruit for this wine is grown at an elevation of 1310 feet on the grounds of the Winery. The higher elevation and the proximity to the Blue Mountains, gives this vineyard a longer, cooler ripening season than most other areas of the Walla Walla Appellation. The cooler site results in a style much like that of a classic Northern Rhone with complexity and balance without the concentration and higher alcohol levels of Syrah produced in warmer areas.

Name is chosen for its simple beauty and its reminder of times past when farming implied a respect for the environment and close connection to the earth. Abeja is located on a century olad farmstead in the breathtaking foothills of the Blue Mountains. Once seriously dilapidated, all of the original farm buildings have been carefully restored with an emphasis on craftsmanship and longevity. Creative use of salvaged materials adds interest and sets the stage for renewed purpose in these old buildings, which now house our winery and our guests. Read less

So tasty! I had this wine this past Labor Day weekend, 2007, paired with seared scallops at 26 Brix in Walla Walla, Abeja's home town. Talk about a long taste curve, this thing lives on. Great flavors, delicious dark cherries, not too strong, not too big, not too sweet.
