Abeja Chardonnay Washington 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

Not yet reviewed; 2011 vintage rated 93 points and 'Editors' Choice' by Wine Enthusiast: Another classic vintage of Abeja Chardonnay, this is a memorable style that's built around yummy barrel flavors of toast and caramel, with notes of stone fruits. The three vineyard sources--Celilo, Conner Lee, and French Creek--form a perfect crescent across the state and capture the essence of three quite different AVAs. It has lovely texture and length, with impeccable balance throughout.

Spanish for bee, name is pronounced 'ah-BAY-ha'. Name is chosen for its simple beauty and its reminder of times past when farming implied a respect for the environment and close connection to the earth. Abeja is located on a century olad farmstead in the breathtaking foothills of the Blue Mountains. Once seriously dilapidated, all of the original farm buildings have been carefully restored with an emphasis on craftsmanship and longevity. Creative use of salvaged materials adds interest and sets the stage for renewed purpose in these old buildings, which now house our winery and our guests. Read less

Whole cluster pressed, hyperoxidized, then allowed to settle overnight before it’s barreled, se burgundy barrels, one third new, start malo, stop it when it tastes right, let them sit on the lees, sometimes stirred, this year didn't to preserve as much fruit as possible, Very elegant barrel fermented nose shows nutty, oily aromas reminiscent of pistachio and prosciutto along with crisp, cool heirloom apple fruit. Rather lean and mineral on the nose, this shows a surprisingly big blast of citrus fruit on entry then turning stony and edgy with bright acids on the palate. There’s a lovely texture, subtle soft and rounded yet remaining bright and nervous in the mouth all leading to a long finish that shows lovely, slightly toasty key lime pie flavors with hints of pineapple. 92pts
