Abadia Retuerta Vino de la Tierra Castilla Y León Viña Arnoldo 2003

Winemaker's Notes:

AGEING: 20 months. D. ORIGIN: Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León. GRAPE VARIETIES: 100% Syrah ALCOHOL VOLUME: 14.5 % SERVING TEMPERATURE: 15-17ºC DESCRIPTION: Great intense colour. Dark black cherry. In the nose we can find a lot of red fruit, very fresh and a lacteous touch, very well blended together with the french wood used for its ageing. Very soft as it comes in the mouth leading into a great fruit explosion. An incredibly expressive wine. Powerful and balanced structure where stands out the excellent quality of the tannins, very ripe, fine and noble. Very long and persistent wine WINEMAKING PROCESS: Plot situated in the higher areas of the estate, slightly inclined to the north. The soil from Pago la Garduña is basically a calcareous soil with a blend of sand and clay with a good capability to retain the water. This pago is hidden by a dense forest of pine trees at an altitude of 790 metres. The wine fermented at around 28ºC and the maceration process lasted a total of 25 days. The malolactic fermentation took place in new Allier oak barrels, of fine grain, medium toast. It then matured for 20 months. This year, Syrah ripeness was really spectacular and we take the decision of bottling this single vineyard wine.

Over 204 hectares of vineyards are spread out on hillsides ranging in altitude from a maximum 850 metres down to the southern bank of the Duero River. We have a wide variety of soils, with representations of most of the world’s best varieties, and state-of-the-art technology (meteorological stations, anti-frost towers, etc.) The rest of the estate is comprised of the winery, 12th century abbey, a farm, forest and bush. Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

Dark maroon in color. The nose is spicey with some green pepper, light vanilla and red fruits. Medium acidity with medium weight tannins. Green pepper from the cabernet sauvignon comes though with cherry flavors. Simple and light the structure is soft and balanced though not a heavily fruit forward wine. 3/5 [NR]

1st tasting-(6/5/2006)The nose is pure vanilla, raspberry with light minerals and with time smokey bacon fat. In the mouth the acidity is great with subdued tannins. Flavors of oak, vanilla, and black pepper give way with time to sweet cherry/raspberry, smoke and towards the finish coffee and chocolate flavors. Long finish and a wine that needs some air to fully realize it's potential. 4.5/5 2nd - (2/25/2006) Dark red in color. The nose on this wine keeps drawing me back with it's mix of raspberries, bacon fat, pepper, oak, vanilla, and anise aromas. Creamy soft in the mouth with an elegant balance of tannins and acid. Flavors of pure raspberries, minerals, black raspberries, pepper, cinnamon and violets all mingle on the palate. Incredibly well made wine. 4.5/5

Dep reddish purple. The nose show's green and black pepper, with some smokey chocolate, and deep red cherry fruit. Fine tannins in the mouth with a strong acidity at first that gives way to rich layered flavors of black pepper, anise, wood and chocolate. As it opens this wine is all fruit and spice, rich cherries, blackberries and more. 3.5/5 [NR]

Great thick texture. Acidic, but in balance. Meaty with a good finish - a real food wine. (Tasted as part of a marathon at the Wines from Spain trade event.)

60% Tempranillo and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12 months in barrel Dark ruby color that has a beautiful consistency reminding me of both a texture and color that would be found in a royal chamber. On the nose, strong notes of coffee, plumes and dark cherry come forth with a slight vegetable or forest aroma in the background. Very light body and structure with medium acidity. On the palate, a strong blackcurrent flavor followed by hints of vanilla and charred wood. Overall, a very nice well structured wine.

From the Sardon del Duero, next door to Ribera, Abadia Retuerta features rich ripe Tempranillo in this well-priced, full-bodied red. Ideal with leg of lamb or beef roasts.
