Earthy, barnyard nose with a hint of fruit and fig. Palate is nice and deep with structured but severe tannins. Fresh black fruits and leather with licorice lingering on the finish. Slightly hot but not unpleasantly so.

Dark and rich red color to this wine. The nose straight out the bottle shows oaky chocolate notes with rich raspberry and black raspberry aromas. In the mouth this wine has firm tannis that are soft and lush with a palate showing wound up black raspberry, and chocolate espresso notes. Nice wine but needs some air. Day two: The bacon fat comes out with a more layered an rich display of cherries and raspberries. Chocolate and roasted coffee too. Really opens up nicely and makes me wish I had some to lay down for a year or two. 4/5 [NR]

Licorice and chocolate. Some leatheriness. Decent with an ok finish. (Tasted as part of a marathon at the Wines from Spain trade event.)

From the Sardon del Duero, next door to Ribera, Abadia Retuerta showcases rich, ripe Tempranillo fruit in this well-priced, full-bodied red. Ideal with leg of lamb or beef roasts.

Winemaker's Notes:

AGEING: 20 months. D. ORIGIN: Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León. GRAPE VARIETIES: 100% Syrah ALCOHOL VOLUME: 14.5 % SERVING TEMPERATURE: 15-17ºC DESCRIPTION: Great intense colour. Dark black cherry. In the nose we can find a lot of red fruit, very fresh and a lacteous touch, very well blended together with the french wood used for its ageing. Very soft as it comes in the mouth leading into a great fruit explosion. An incredibly expressive wine. Powerful and balanced structure where stands out the excellent quality of the tannins, very ripe, fine and noble. Very long and persistent wine WINEMAKING PROCESS: Plot situated in the higher areas of the estate, slightly inclined to the north. The soil from Pago la Garduña is basically a calcareous soil with a blend of sand and clay with a good capability to retain the water. This pago is hidden by a dense forest of pine trees at an altitude of 790 metres. The wine fermented at around 28ºC and the maceration process lasted a total of 25 days. The malolactic fermentation took place in new Allier oak barrels, of fine grain, medium toast. It then matured for 20 months. This year, Syrah ripeness was really spectacular and we take the decision of bottling this single vineyard wine.
