Abadia Retuerta Tempranillo Blend Vino de la Tierra Castilla Y León Cuvée El Palomar 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

The Abadia winery is located in the heart of the Golden Mile of Spanish winemaking between Tudela de Duero and Penafiel. The Golden Mile has special climatic conditions and an age-old winemaking tradition. First planted in 1991, primarily on the northern, stonier and less fertile side of the Duero valley, the estate of Santa Maria de Retuerta covers 700 hectares, of which 204 are planted to vine. The Cuvee El Palomar 2004 is a deep ruby red in colour, with aromas of ripe cherries and prunes and hints of balsamic and spice. On the palate, the wine is smooth and fleshy, the Cabernet Sauvignon adding extra depth and intensity to the strawberry fruit perfume and fresh acidity of the Tempranillo. Judicious oak ageing tempers the Cabernet tannins, producing an attractive, approachable wine even in its youth. Nicely structured, with a long, elegant finish. 90 points Robert Parker.

Over 204 hectares of vineyards are spread out on hillsides ranging in altitude from a maximum 850 metres down to the southern bank of the Duero River. We have a wide variety of soils, with representations of most of the world’s best varieties, and state-of-the-art technology (meteorological stations, anti-frost towers, etc.) The rest of the estate is comprised of the winery, 12th century abbey, a farm, forest and bush.
