Abadia Retuerta Cabernet Sauvignon 'Pago Valdebellon' 2009

External Review by JJ Buckley Fine Wines:

Bright purple. Pungent spice-accented aromas of cherry-cola blackcurrant smoked meat and vanilla. Offers deeply pitched dark berry and spice flavors a suggestion of sweet chewing tobacco and a strong back-end jolt of vanilla. Closes long and sweet with strong spice and floral qualities and gentle tannins. Stephen Tanzers IWC.

Over 204 hectares of vineyards are spread out on hillsides ranging in altitude from a maximum 850 metres down to the southern bank of the Duero River. We have a wide variety of soils, with representations of most of the world’s best varieties, and state-of-the-art technology (meteorological stations, anti-frost towers, etc.) The rest of the estate is comprised of the winery, 12th century abbey, a farm, forest and bush. Among a small population of varietal Spanish Cabernets Pago Valdebell

The 2009 Pago Valdebellon is a pure Cabernet Sauvignon although perversely it reminds me of a Cabernet Franc with its savoriness and hints of green pepper on the nose. The palate is full-bodied with very firm sturdy tannins: black fruit intermarried with mocha and leather that lead to a balanced rather foursquare finish with a seam of dark chocolate. Drink 2013-2020. -Neal Martin Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.
