A To Z Wineworks Pinot Gris Wine 2016

Member Review by sbr1105:

I love Pinot Gris from the US. It has much more body than the same varietal from other parts of the world. Except Italy of course. This one is well made. The winery really gives it lots of fruit, balanced citrus and a little left over sugar as a treat.

A to Z Wineworks was started in 2002 by four friends, Oregon wine industry veterans, Deb Hatcher (Eyrie), Bill Hatcher (Domaine Drouhin Oregon), Sam Tannahill (Archery Summit) and Cheryl. Francis (Chehalem). The two couples worked in the Hatcher's kitchen to build the original blend honored by Food & Wine Magazine as the Best American Pinot Noir under $20. Recognition for their A to Z wines with dependable quality and great value continued and production grew. In 2006, the group welcomed another Oregon wine veteran, Michael Davies, as winemaker, and partnered with Gregg Popovich (Coach of the San Antonio Spurs) to buy REX HILL Vineyards and Winery (established in 1982). A to Z has worked with more than 100 vineyards across the state always offering assistance for sustainability certification that the group expects to be achieved within three years of partnering. Today, A to Z has two viticulturists on staff and uses biodynamic principles to farm all owned or long-leased vineyards. Diverse sourcing across the state mitigates regional weather difficulties and adds complexity and depth to the one wine of each variety that is blended in any vintage. Additionally, A to Z has more collective Oregon winemaking experience than any other winery, experience that can make a difference in difficult vintages. A to Z remains true to the dual mission of offer Aristocratic Wines at Democratic Prices blending one cuvee each vintage of Pinot Noir, Chardonny and Pinot Gris that deliver the Essence of Oregon. A commitment to excellence is matched by a belief in fair value and sustainability in business as well as farming and a drive to offer the highest quality for the best value. A to Z Oregon Pinot Noir has twice been named to Wine Spectator's Top 100 wines of the yar; A to Z Oregon Pinot Gris is a perennial Best Buy; and A to Z Oregon Chardonnay is America's Best Selling Oregon Chardonnay. A to Z is also a certified B Corporation. Read less

Looks like I overpaid for this (over $20), but I am still happy with the wine. Very pale pour. A fresh, tangy white. It begins with some surprising sweetness , followed by tartness, and then settling to a gravelly warmth. This has a touch of Oregon pine in it. A multifaceted wine whose character changes with food and temperature.

A to Z Pinot Gris leads with bright aromas of tropical fruits (lemon, lime, lychee, mango, passion fruit and kiwi) as well as melon, ginger, lemongrass and wet stone. Succulent and juicy on the attack, the mid-palate is drenched with peach, spiced pear, baked apple, quince, hibiscus, white flower and mineral flavors. On the finish, the acidity wraps up the wine with a clean, fresh palate and lasting impression of a wine with great purity and typicity balanced by some richness and depth.

Scents of white flowers and ripe pineapple give this a florid and rich feel, finishing with pleasant bitterness. A value for summer quaffing.

The 2013 A to Z Pinot Gris has lifted aromas of honeysuckle, lemon zest, nutmeg and wet stone developing into richer aromas of lychee, beeswax and melon that add complexity to the nose. The attack is juicy and pure with bright citrus fruit flavors and mineral notes. Taut structure and a tight wire balance between ripeness and acidity frame a seamless mid-palate and lead to a long finish that ultimately ends crisp and clean with flavors of wet stone and jasmine green tea. - Winery ** Only 6 in Stock **

The 2012 A to Z Pinot Gris has intense aromatics of lime blossom, nectarine, tangerine, melon, wet stone and guava that build into aromatics of nutmeg, bing cherries and kiwi. The palate is concentrated, ripe and succulent with wonderful lush fruit and mineral notes. The concentration is framed by ripe acidity that gives lift to the wine as it moves to the mid-palate. The flavors on the mid-palate echo the aromas with a deeper note of honey. The wine moves seamlessly into a finish that goes on for some time before finishing crisply. The lasting impression of the wine is great purity and intensity balanced by wonderful juiciness and succulence. - Winery
