A To Z 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

Clear and vibrant, this wine has a beautiful dark color and aromas of mixed berries, earth, smoke, violets, Asian spices and minerals. In the mouth, the wine mirrors the aromatics with a succulent texture and good acidity. As the finish unfolds, the individual characteristics of the wine unify and augment one another. Beautifully balanced between richness and power, the wine possesses amazing depth and purity. Classically proportioned while being built with long term potential, the concentrated 2005 A to Z Pinot Noir will be perhaps the longest lived wine we have made. Winery

A to Z Wineworks was started in 2002 by four friends, Oregon wine industry veterans, Deb Hatcher (Eyrie), Bill Hatcher (Domaine Drouhin Oregon), Sam Tannahill (Archery Summit) and Cheryl. Francis (Chehalem). The two couples worked in the Hatcher's kitchen to build the original blend honored by Food & Wine Magazine as the Best American Pinot Noir under $20. Recognition for their A to Z wines with dependable quality and great value continued and production grew. In 2006, the group welcomed another Oregon wine veteran, Michael Davies, as winemaker, and partnered with Gregg Popovich (Coach of the San Antonio Spurs) to buy REX HILL Vineyards and Winery (established in 1982). A to Z has worked with more than 100 vineyards across the state always offering assistance for sustainability certification that the group expects to be achieved within three years of partnering. Today, A to Z has two viticulturists on staff and uses biodynamic principles to farm all owned or long-leased vineyards. Diverse sourcing across the state mitigates regional weather difficulties and adds complexity and depth to the one wine of each variety that is blended in any vintage. Additionally, A to Z has more collective Oregon winemaking experience than any other winery, experience that can make a difference in difficult vintages. A to Z remains true to the dual mission of offer Aristocratic Wines at Democratic Prices blending one cuvee each vintage of Pinot Noir, Chardonny and Pinot Gris that deliver the Essence of Oregon. A commitment to excellence is matched by a belief in fair value and sustainability in business as well as farming and a drive to offer the highest quality for the best value. A to Z Oregon Pinot Noir has twice been named to Wine Spectator's Top 100 wines of the yar; A to Z Oregon Pinot Gris is a perennial Best Buy; and A to Z Oregon Chardonnay is America's Best Selling Oregon Chardonnay. A to Z is also a certified B Corporation. Read less

Coconut Rice Sweet Potato Cheesecake

One of the more subtle pinots I've sampled. It's dry and has a finish that very quickly fades away without leaving much flavor. Yeah, I'm liking this.

Based on the plaudits it's received, this is astonishingly overrated. My wife and I are burghounds trying with great energy to find Willamette proxies and everything I've tried over the years among Oregonian pinots bests this one. Perhaps my palette is hopelessly unattuned, but we won't be trying this again.

This is a solid Oregon Pinot Nior, it shows that Oregon can produce well made Pinot, however it isn't the best I have had from there. The body is full and the nose has nice aromas, very fruity. I would keep a few around for people who like Pinot Noir.

It has a bright fruitful taste with a flat ending. Colors are clear and crisp. Not sure I would buy this again.

This is my everyday pinot. Very easy to drink, and a reasonable price.

Love this wine. A good example of the great year that Oregon had.

Had a bottle with dinner last night. Wanted something to go with my pork and husband's arctic char. Not to heavy, not much flavor, but a nice, subtle pinot, which is what we wanted. We paid $34 so not too high of a markup.
