A. Coroa Godello Valdeorras 2016

Winemaker's Notes:

Very floral aromas, with notes of wild fennel, ripe peach, and a touch of tropical fruit (pineapple, mango). On the palate it shows its varietal characteristics: fresh, structured, and unmistakably Godello. The finish has a pronounced minerality and a slight pleasing bitterness.

Who says white wines are only for warm summer months? This white reminds us of apple picking in the fall & the crunch of fallen leaves beneath our feet. Crisp, tart fruitiness & subtle minerality. Tip back a glass & embrace the season!

I bought two bottles of this wine from the website www.cellartrade.co.uk for £10. Valdeorras got DO status in 1945 for red, rose and white wines from that area of Galicia in north-west Spain. Valdeorras translates as 'valley of gold' as the Romans mined gold here although the river that runs through it is called the River Sil.The godello grape [known as Gouveio in Portugal] is indigenous to Valdeorras and it is a grape that has enjoyed a resurgence since the 1980's.My bottle was made of this grape by the small concern of A Coroa and the wine spent six months on its lees in stainless steel tanks.I started the first bottle last night with my supper of cod in cheese sauce. It is a dry almost bitter wine. There is a kind of sour apple, almond and ginger style fruit. This is not short on flavours and is definitely not mineral or bland and it was a good match for the fish.

Tangy, with a slightly bitter aftertaste, but not unpleasant. The flavor is difficult to pin down: it's not particularly fruity, but has enough acid to make it satisfying. The mouthfeel is a little glycerine, and the finish long.

Pale gold. High-pitched aromas and flavors of orange, green apple and fresh fig, with a gingery top note. Lithe and precise, with excellent finishing clarity and lingering floral notes. This suave, seamless wine would work with light as well as with... Stephen Tanzers IWC. A Godello wine from Valdeorras in Spain. 2011 A Coroa Godello 750ml

This Godello truly puts all other Godellos to shame. From 5 unique parcels of mostly slate and granite soil, much care is taken in the farming and wine making at this small estate. The wine spends up to 5 months on the lees and is extra ripe and full of leesy honey and green apple notes.
