What to Expect

California's Napa Valley has been a source of world-class Cabernet Sauvignon for well over a century. Its warm climate and varied terrain allows for many styles of wine. One thread that runs through almost all the Cabernet based wines from Napa is their lush, ripe full-bodied feel and rich flavors of currant and berry. Wines from the valley floor, particularly around Rutherford, are famed for a dusty quality and those coming from the hillsides surrounding the valley, Mt. Veeder, Diamond Mountain and Howell Mountain for example, tend to be a little leaner with more obvious structural elements.

"87,Wine AdvocateThe opaque ruby-colored 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa is a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, 6% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot. The wine reveals a sweet attack of fruitcake, spice box, dried herbs, and black fruits. It is bordeaux-like, with hard, tough tannin, an angular personality, and an astringent finish. This is a perplexing offering. There is an impressive beginning, but the finish is narrow and pinched, hence the question mark. My instincts suggest it will age for 12-15 years, but will always be dry and austere, without the charm and sweetness of the finest vintages. "

The 1999 Silver Oak Napa Valley is a deep, rich Cabernet Sauvignon with a garnet color and a concentrated nose of cocoa, cassis syrup, coffee, and black licorice. It is extremely full-bodied on the palate and has an incredibly long finish of black licorice and vanilla.

I decanted this wine for 2-3 hours. It was great as usual, but I would suggest cellaring it for a few more (2 or 3) years. The cab was bold and tannins were present. Black cherry, hints coco notes, faint raspberry, made it very enjoyable.

Wine Spectator ReviewRated 91Dill, lavender and mocha scents are followed by a trace of coconut and layers of spicy currant, herb, sage and plum flavors. Very rich and concentrated. Impeccably balanced, with a long, persistent aftertaste that keeps echoing fruit and oak. Some will find the oak excessive, others just the Silver Oak signature. Drink now through 2012.

Rating: 89-92 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 102, May/June 2002 (with 8% cabernet franc, 6% merlot and 3% petit verdot) Rich, full nose combines roasted currant, cedar, spice box, chocolate mint, coconut and smoky oak, along with a lightly leafy quality. The lushest and fullest wine of this tasting, with the most harmonious combination of fruit and acidity. Dense but firm and nicely delineated. Finishes with fine, spreading tannins that coat the mouth and teeth.
