What to Expect

California's Napa Valley has been a source of world-class Cabernet Sauvignon for well over a century. Its warm climate and varied terrain allows for many styles of wine. One thread that runs through almost all the Cabernet based wines from Napa is their lush, ripe full-bodied feel and rich flavors of currant and berry. Wines from the valley floor, particularly around Rutherford, are famed for a dusty quality and those coming from the hillsides surrounding the valley, Mt. Veeder, Diamond Mountain and Howell Mountain for example, tend to be a little leaner with more obvious structural elements.

Creamy dill and lavender aromas lead to similar flavors, wrapped around a core of rich, earthy currant, cedar, anise and sage. Complex and concentrated, though it turns tannic and dry on the finish. Drink now through 2006. 18,000 cases made. (JL) Wine Spectator. A Cabernet Sauvignon wine from California in USA. 1998 Silver Oak Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 750ml

Dark Ruby to garnet color and a complex nose of blackbery jam, chocolate, roasted coffee, sandalwood and nutmeg. It has a full body and a rich elegant finish with nicely integrated tannins. It will continue to get smoother over the next months and will improve for 15-20 years.

Rating: 87/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 102, May/June 2002 Full red-ruby, with a hint of amber. Riper on the nose than the Alexander, with currant, loam and mocha aromas complicated by herbs and nutty oak. Offers more texture and sweetness to buffer its acidity, with bitter cherry and currant flavors in the middle and on the aftertaste. Here the tannins are broader, but the lingering finish is still a bit dry and green.

88 pts from Robert Parker! "The 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa (93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot) is a narrowly constructed, firmer, less generous offering than previous vintages of the nineties. The attractive dark ruby/purple color is accompanied by sweet aromas of cassis, smoked herbs, oak, and earth. Gritty tannin is noticeable in the finish. Drink this Cabernet during its first 10-12 years of life." - August 2002 Issue of The Wine Advocate - 87 pts from Wine Spectator! Wine Tasting NotesThe 1998 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a medium ruby color. It has a nose of rose petals, blackberry and allspice. This wine is elegant on the palate and bursting with blackberry fruit and has an extremely long finish. Properly cellared, this Cabernet will continue to improve through 2020.
