98 Pinot Noir Napa Valley-Mondavi Rotwein Kalifornien 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

The vineyard team hand-harvested the Pinot Noir grapes in the cool morning hours to capture vivid fruit flavors and natural balance. Most of the fruit was destemmed and lightly crushed prior to fermentation; in some of the tanks we used a percentage of whole clusters during fermentation to increase complexity. Using specially selected yeast cultures, the wine fermented in open-top stainless-steel fermentation tanks. After an average of 26 days maceration (skin contact), the wine was transferred to 100% new French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation, followed by 12 months of barrel aging. Wine analysis: 0.695% total acid, 3.39 pH, 0.059% residual sugar, and 15.6% alcohol, by volume

The Robert Mondavi Winery was founded in 1966 after a family split with the Charles Krug Winery, which had been founded by Robert’s father.  After heading out on his own, Robert settled on land in Napa valley, and in particular the famed To Kalon Vineyard in the Rutherford district. The original plot in To Kalon Vineyard was only 12 acres, but today there are 450 acres under vine. The Robert Mondavi Winery also includes the Wappo Hill Vineyard, which is a 400 acre plot in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley. Within a year of its inception, the Robert Mondavi Winery proved to be a true pioneer, not only with the establishment of his winery but also by introducing and popularizing the use of French oak barrels for wine, European wine techniques, and the bottling of varietal wines. Robert Mondavi Winery only uses French Oak barrels for storing wine, and his influence and success led to the practice’s prevalence. Among Mondavi’s greatest successes one would have to count the creation of the Fume Blanc moniker for Sauvignon Blanc as well as the introduction of his benchmark Napa Valley Reserve Cabernet. Today Robert Mondavi’s legacy is carried on under the watchful eye of his wife who works with the current winemakers Genevieve Janssens, Gustavo Gonzalez, and Richard Arnold to ensure that today’s Robert Mondavi wines deliver the elegance, appeal, and character that Robert had intended. Write your review here, and rate the wine from 1 to 5 glasses above. This really offers up some nice, complex aromatics that start off rather pine foresty with really sweet wood tones that recall coffee cream, and marshmallows but gains some depth with a meaty note and accents of sweet pipe tobacco and some dried tomato. On entry this is sweet but quickly turns hard and angular with tough little tannins fighting the small red fruits for your attention. The tannins win on the moderately short finish, which is also a tad hot. This just may need time but is a little disappointing. 86pts

Lots of cherry and some earthiness in the aromas. More depth to the cherries in the midpalate, which turns very much in the direction of black cherry. Some creaminess and chocolate notes in the aftertaste, along with baking spice. Not the silky texture I associate with Pinot Noir, but lots of grip in the midpalate for a wine at this price point. The texture improves with air. Hard to argue with at $11.

I just picked this one up at Trader Joes and it is bar none, the best $8.50 bottle of Pinot I've ever tasted. I'm a committed fan of Joes 2-buck Chuck Sharaz, and a decades-devoted non-snob. RM has hit a home run with this one!! Fantastic wine.

Cherry colored with a crimson cast. Moderately light-bodied. Moderate extract, oak and tannins. Herbs, red berries, cherries. Floral nose. Attractively high toned spiced style, with a rounded and racy fruit profile through the toasty finish. Drinking rather well now with good acidity to match rich foods.

All the work that the winery did for so many years with Pinot Noir is brought home with this delicate, elegant wine. It combines lovely Carneros cherry, pomegranate, cola and spice flavors with cool-climate acidity to produce a dry, silky table wine that's easy to like. It's not an ageable blockbuster, but will be irresistible now with roast duck, pork or salmon dishes.

Wine Tasting NotesThe Pinot Noir is a lovely floral wine with a kick of refreshing acidity. Ripe, well-integrated tannins merge with flavors of dark plum enlivened with a zing of cranberry and whispers of tobacco and green tea. The complex array of aromas and flavors comes from grapes grown in the Los Carneros region of Napa and Sonoma Valleys, where the cool marine climate and clay loam soils foster vibrantly fruity Pinot Noir. More than a dozen different Pinot Noir clones contribute depth and dimension to the wine, and specially selected Burgundian yeasts add further nuances of flavor. Aging in small Burgundian barrels imparts a hint of toasty oak in the long, lingering finish

winemaker's notes: Plum red in color the 2007 vintage is vibrant with considerable substance and structure. Aromas and flavors of dark fruits, black plum and jammy black cherry, merge with notes of spice, herbs and subtle oak. Fine-grained tannins lead to a long, smooth finish. A richly satisfying wine.

Mondavi's Carneros Pinot Noir has been dependable for years, and this one continues the tradition. It's dry and balanced, with cherry, cola, coffee and herb flavors, and has the silky tannins and crisp acids you want in a Pinot.

Tasting Notes:

The 2007 Pinot Noir Reserve is sophisticated, serious and classic. The wine opens with fresh aromas of dark fruit—black cherry, blackberry and black plum—underscored by notes of earth, spice and minerality. Similar flavors blossom in the mouth, backed by richly textured, firm tannins. A powerful wine with weight, presence and elegance.
