337 Lodi Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

337 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits appealing aromas of black cherry, ripe currant and lightly roasted coffee. Supple tannins and balanced acidity support core flavors of black cherry, blackberry and cassis, intertwined with sweet herbs and black pepper spice accents. This wine can be enjoyed on its own or with pork loin stuffed with spinach and herbs, grilled baby back ribs or roast turkey.

High Altitude:
Named for the French vine clone, 337 is an alluring expression of a California Cabernet Sauvignon with prestigious Bordeaux roots. The vines are cultivated for structure and flavor in the cobblestones of Lodi’s Clay Station Vineyard, making a wine that exudes seductive aromas of mocha and dark cherry. An explosion of spice and blackberry unwinds to a velvety, luscious finish.

The wine is a bit lighter in color than I expected, with a bright ruby color throughout. The nose exhibits notes of leather, oak and rich ripe fruit, blackberries, cherries and plums. The taste is somewhat fruit forward, with a blast of sweet ripe fruit at the outset, eerily similar to many Lodi Zins, which then transitions to some earthy limestone notes midpalate. The tannins are somewhat subdued, even though this wine has a very nice, long and modestly dry finish. 337 delivers concentrated flavors that ignite the senses. The 337 clone is an early ripening grape with small berry clusters that deliver a bold, but luscious wine with spice and blackberry. The 337 clone is renowned for lacking the herbal and veggie characteristics that can detract from the Cabernet Sauvignon grape.

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Clone 337 is a deceptively mid-weight wine. As is often the case, the 337 clone in To Kalon yields a style of Cabernet Sauvignon that is intensely perfumed, graceful and totally impeccable. Exotic red berries, flowers and spices meld together beautifully in this poised, gracious Cabernet Sauvignon. Anticipated maturity: 2012–2029.

Beautifully crafted, rich and seamless, this delivers a weave of ripe plum, blackberry and currant, joined by mocha, espresso and mineral notes. Full-bodied without being weighty, leading to a long, graceful finish. Drink now through 2024.

Dark ruby-red. Wonderfully pure aromas of cassis, blackberry, flowers, spices, cedar and graphite. Lush, thick and sweet; this wonderfully elegant, creamy wine really glides down the throat. No rough edges here! Very sexy and complex cabernet with terrific breadth, noble tannins and outstanding length. It’s hard to imagine a wine like this ever really shutting down in the bottle.

The 337 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits enticing aromas of toffee, black cherry and currant. Balanced tannins underscore core flavors of black cherry, blackberry and currant, interlaced with roasted coffee bean and hints of black pepper.

Rating: 84/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the August 2010 issue. The typically attractive Lodi-area red comes with a pleasant voluptuousness born of high ripeness and pretty good concentration underlain by a supple underbelly. Not so here. This wine has the ripeness, but it is thin in fruit and pinched and sour in taste.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Unlikely to improve with further aging.
